  1. What model Shelta did you get?
  2. The cloth is expensive but worth it if you are planning some miles. Talk to Dave Parr (Waldo) at Calibre Sails, he's done quite a few. 021 782 764

    Removing Epoxy

Meths. Sounds just wrong but I have been using it for years to clean epoxy brushes, thin epoxy for sealing and wiping up. If I was in your scenario (nothing to lose) I would: - orientate the rudder so leading edge up - 2 or 3 layers of paper towels over the bits you want to clean - saturate with meths - cover with cling film so meths stays in and air out - leave overnight - have at least one beer while repeating to yourself "I will never mix products again" - see what it looks like in the morning All is not lost yet!

    CG wifi?

We use Wireless Nation and it's fabbo. 120 Gb for a hundy.
  6. Good to know, maybe my rather jaundiced view of the subject needs some adjustment!
  7. I believe I did a proper job, properly crimped alloy/plastic fixed piping, vented locker etc etc. It isn't really an area where you want to cut corners, but in this world of Compliance and arse covering I'm interested in where I stand.
  8. Thanks for that, good to know. What is your opinion if my boat is a 1977 vintage but rebuilt? I had no questions importing it and insurance has not asked either. Obviously I won't be shouting from the rooftops but I'm interested to know where I stand,
  9. I use the inserts and cable ties, the cable ties are most visible and the inserts are very useful when re-marking the chain when the cable ties fall off. Every 10m. And bejeesus those inserts are feckingly expensive, about a $ each.
  10. The Cat rules state that you must be compliant with the relevant gas code. AFAIK there is no way you would ever get a gas fitter to sign off the flexible connection to a gimballed stove, so it's all a crock of compliance crud.

    House Battery Issue

With multiple 6V cells, I seem to remember being told to rotate them round the system from time to time. May be an old wives tale but seemed to make sense at the time. I went to Lithium about 18 months ago, definitely a less stressful environment.
  12. Good luck getting a gas fitter anywhere near a boat.
  13. I think you would be in trouble if you have an AC connection to your batteries! I agree about the quality/safety thing, after spending a BOAT unit on getting a sign-off for something pretty damn simple.

    House Battery Issue

My initial guess would be the linking cable between the 2 batteries. If that is broken/underspec/undone/too long I think that could produce the symptoms you see? It is the battery on the charging side that is heating?
  15. My professionally installed and EWOF'd AC system is very simple. Approved external plug, RCD switchy thing, double socket. Definitely no inter-connection to 12V system (why would you?). I would add that my 12V system (again, done by a professional) does not include earthing to engine, all -ve connections go back to battery. I'm no electrical genius but I simply don't understand why some 12V systems include the engine. Asking for trouble galvanically?
  16. Read the Cat rules first, it is worthwhile. LIFELINES 17.17 The minimum diameter lifeline wire shall be: X X X R R Yachts under 8.5m (LOA) 3mm Yachts 8.5m to 13m 4mm Yachts over 13m 5mm Wire manufactured with a plastic coating shall not be used. Grade 316 Stainless Wire is recommended – 1x19. Tape unacceptable. If fibre used instead of wire e.g. single braided dyneema, spectra, vectran, dynex or similar, there can be no tolerance for wear. Material must be protected from U.V. and chafe by a sheath. Sheath can be taken as an overbraided core over the main load member of the same material or
  17. Totally confused as well as very amused - report says "he knew that he broke a rule", then "she knew she had broken a rule" She said "suck my balls"?? That must be OK? If it was a He then it's not OK. Discuss.

    Sold Boat

Gave up on Auckland a while ago. Whangarei Town Basin is owned by a community trust, so profits go to those that need it rather than Simon Herbert's latest hooker.
  19. The David Thatcher guides are worth having too.

    Best Coolant

Anzor was/is the most ridiculous - 85% discount. I don't understand why you would do that.
  21. Some good stuff there, thanks all for the input. I've done a couple of trips Southbound before but never spent time in the Sounds. Looking forward to it!
