  1. Listen to the Tom Whidden podcast to get the other side of the story: https://shirleyrobertson.com/podcast/ He reckons that Australia had a faster boat, and should have won easily but were outsailed by USA, who won more starts and had better tactics. USA took a punt on a new designer, but when the boat was built it didn't measure, so they had to go back to NYYC to ask for more money. When the third boat was built it was no faster than their boat from the previous cup.
  2. There is an exemption from the dolphin rules for CC competitors during the race. Exception ends on Saturday 3pm.
  3. And now one more withdrawal. Capt Coconut (the Aussie) has pulled out at the Canary Islands, so he can go to his son's wedding. Now there are 13.

    She's Back...

Dead seal found at Westhaven but sadly it's not Owha. https://i.stuff.co.nz/environment/300691446/leopard-seal-found-dead-at-aucklands-westhaven-marina
  5. Sadly one of them has hit the rocks. Guy deBoer the American entry went aground on a lee shore on Fuerteventura, just after the drop point. He is safe not injured, but the boat is being pounded by surf. Most of the others have passed the first drop point in the Canary Islands, now heading for Trinidad Island, in SW Atlantic.
  6. @marinheiro any tips on this?
  7. Umm correction, the Golden Globe Race (single-handed) GGR2022 has just started. The Ocean Globe Race (fully crewed) starts next year. Can you change the title for this thread?
  8. Two men who scuttled vessel in Waiheke Island marine reserve and misled investigators fined $40,000 in Environment Court Two men who sank a vessel in a marine reserve near Waiheke Island have been fined $40,000 in court. John Peter Lenssen and Cain Subritzy were found guilty in the Environment Court of deliberately scuttling Blue Beard off Whakanewha Regional Park in 2019, Auckland Council said. They were fined $20,000 each and ordered to remove the wreck and any other items from the bottom of the seabed within three months. https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/two-men-who-scuttle
  9. Good information, thanks!
  10. Classique will be familiar to many Westhaven sailors, as being the biggest vessel on the moorings on the northern side of the harbour. Many times we had to tack around Classique on the beat back to the finish line (inside for Richmond, outside for Squadron due to their differing sailing insstructions). Classique also damaged several other yachts by dragging onto them in that storm. The other owners were not amused.
  11. Well done! Not easy with the variable weather.
  12. Finish line has been moved to Islington Bay.
  13. With the Squadron AGM on this week, will Jim Farmer go for commodore, stack the committee with supporters who will sack ETNZ, cancel Barcelona, and hold the next event in Auckland? This article suggests it could happen: A former Team New Zealand director is putting the pressure on the next Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron boss to get the America's Cup back home. https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/sport/2022/08/america-s-cup-pressure-growing-to-stage-defence-in-new-zealand-amid-controversial-barcelona-call.html
  14. For those of us on the Railblaza course, how does the short course work with race 3? We know the finish will be somewhere near Moutihe Island. We have to round Motukorea Buoy to starboard, then Bean Rock to port, then finish at Motuihe. PIC - Railblaza Short Course: approx. 25nm Start, passing Motutapu Island (port), Rakino (starboard), The Haystack (Orarapa) Island (starboard), Motuihe Island (starboard), Brown Island (port), Motukorea Buoy (starboard), Bean Rock (Port) to Finish. Does this mean we can do a 180 at Motukorea Buoy, and go straight to the finish? Or do we s
  15. I spotted the updated handicaps a day or 2 before race 2, on this page: https://www.ssanz.co.nz/pic-triple-series-2022-handicaps/
  16. Tony Smith and his Ross 930 is a legend around Westhaven, and just got awarded 10 grand from ASB Good as Gold. On TV1's Seven Sharp program last night (Wed 10 Aug). https://fb.watch/eQsK7bVWzB/
  17. Interesting article about tides around New Zealand. There is an amphidromic point in Oteranga Bay near Wellington, where there is no tidal movement. Plus, how the tides in French Pass can kill John Dories. https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/explained/300651952/explained-the-new-zealand-beach-where-the-moon-doesnt-move-the-sea
  18. Thanks for the explanation Mark. Some suggestions: 1) Boat history. Maybe the adjustment could vary depending on the known history. So for a boat with a lot of history, less adjustment would occur as the handicap is reasonably good to start with. But for a boat with little or no history, bigger adjustments should be allowed. 2) Limits. Maybe place a maximum on the adjustment that can occur. For example, someone has gear failure, or gets stuck in a hole that everyone else avoids, or takes a flyer and gets a breeze that no-one else does. This is unlikely to happen to the same boat in th
  19. Unfortunately the handicapper made some large adjustments after race one. 👎 Was a bad idea to make such big changes based on one race where boats are finishing in a dying breeze, in my opinion.
  20. One story is that Truxton crossed the finish line at 2:30am, then turned around and sailed straight to Tauranga! 😲 (If the tracker is correct).
  21. Sparky is supposed to do 4 shipping moves, so much longer than 30 minutes. According to this: https://www.poal.co.nz/media-publications/Pages/Sparky-arrives-in-Auckland.aspx
  22. Maybe talk to the classic yacht association https://classicyacht.org.nz/
