  1. Putting the multi-cultural DNA into America's Cup 2021 The challenge for Team New Zealand's event arm America's Cup Events Limited will be to create a festival that connects with and reflects all of Auckland's communities. It needs to be relevant and meaningful to young Pasifika people and Māori from south Auckland, with Asian communities in the south-east and central fringe suburbs. All Aucklanders and New Zealanders are chipping in to the tune of $212 million (and undoubtedly rising) for an event and waterfront upgrades far from their homes. So while the next months m

  3. Community votes overwhelmingly against marina sale, as council takes new tack A proposal to sell off an Auckland marina has been "overwhelmingly rejected" by its community, as the council moves to review its policy on marina sales. Ninety per cent of respondents to Panuku's public consultation on the future of Hobsonville Marina at West Harbour said they do not want to see parts of the marina sold for development. Only five per cent supported the proposal, which could include 250 high-rise apartments up to 21 metres high on the waterfront. more here: https://www.stuff.c

    Mr X

Honk Marine Limited, and Honk Barges Limited = tax evasion.
  5. At a guess Westhaven, since it has the biggest carparks? Also I believe there is runoff from the motorway. Bayswater would have the least, since it is a floating marina (no solid outer walls). But there are plenty of boats in Westhaven with Micron 66 working well.
  6. The way the sailing instructions are written it appears that courses will never be shortened and start/ finish lines will never be changed. Given that there is such a long time limit (Sunday midday), one wonders why it would be necessary to do so? Maybe next year the sailing instructions should be updated to clarify?
  7. Seems like Wayne Walker is very much on the side of the Marina Users Association. Hard to tell about the others.
  8. Start was delayed till after 1pm due fog and no wind. The heavy weather course was then chosen, and for some divisions this course was altered from the one printed in the sailing instructions!! Halfway through the race this already short course was shortened - "go straight to finish", although this may not have been done correctly, and there is at least one protest about this!!!!
  9. Yes, apparently he broke his self steering, so used his emergency tiller to fix it. Then he broke his tiller! Shame, because Peche probably would have won the race if his boat stayed together. On the other hand sounds like he didn't take enough tools and spares - the same problem seems to be affecting many of the others. Apparently, the godfather (73 year old Jean-Luc van den Heede), has taken a small inflatable dinghy which he uses when fixing his self steering!
  10. The sewage tunnel was the biggest and most expensive engineering project ever completed by the North Shore City Council in 2010. The tunnel takes the wastewater sewage from the Shore and also west Auckland (former Waitakere). The treated water is pumped out 2km from land into the channel. Previously it was only 600m out from Castor Bay, and the locals didn't like the water or smell. The funny thing is all the North Shore ratepayers paid for this - good for the next 100 years. Then the Supercity gave it all to Watercare, and they tripled our water rates. Now the North Shore ratepay

  12. After 16 days sailing, the fleet has now reached the first gate at the Canary Islands. The leaders are sailing in trade winds with spinnakers up doing 8 knots. We have one more withdrawal, and 3 have major issues with their self steering. Kevin Farebrother, an Australian former Paratrooper who has made three successful assents up Mt Everest, conceded on Sunday “I’m not cut out for solo sailing.” He told race organisers that he could not contemplate sleeping below decks. “For me it is like getting into the back seat of a moving car to sleep when no-one is at the wheel. As a result, I’ve h
  13. The barnacles are horrendous at Opua. One boat recently scraped of 10kgs of barnacles after sitting on a swing mooring there for only a few months over summer.
  14. Interesting interview on RNZ yesterday. Euan Little says the waiting list for Westhaven is 200 boats long. The guy from Panuku says they are saving the hammerhead at Gulf Harbour, and the developers will increase public access. https://www.radionz.co.nz/national/programmes/ninetonoon/audio/2018652778/a-tug-of-war-over-auckland-s-marinas
  15. Looks like 2 withdrawals already. The Turkish Englishman has pulled into Spain, and one Italian never got his boat up to scratch to leave in time. Meanwhile the French racer has pulled out a bit of a lead. And the sole woman is doing well in fifth place. http://goldengloberace.com/livetracker/

  20. Also new to Auckland is a Young 13 called The Black Pearl, which has come down from Kerikeri.
  21. Looks like nearly all the boats pulled into Kawau. Only 2 boats continued were Wild Oats and Clandestine Jet, according to the tracker.
  22. Fair enough. He had been warned, and had to be rescued. Good to see MaritimeNZ trying to make our boaties a bit safer.
  23. OK, so it's "MoonShine". Much bigger than a Harmonic. Shane is moving up in the world!
