Agree on the private operator problem. When I phoned Auckland Council they didn't want to know. I finally tracked down the council officer with responsibility for the contract. She said I'm new in the job I know nothing. Seems she gets paid an enormous amount too if her job title is anything to go by.

I'd also err on side of caution. Sailing downwind for newbies can be quite deceptive. Because you are "in" the wind you don't realise that it might be pretty blowy. Accidental gybe would not be pleasant. Buildup of waves behind you can also be tricky if there's wind against tide. Yesterday I took my compass from the grab bag to use it. It was stuck and a great big bubble prevented the card from rotating. I shook it a few times and it was still stuck. This morning I picked it up again to research the problem and the big bubble has broken into smaller bubbles and it works again. I really don't want to be stuck at sea without a working compass. And my father in law's old handheld marine compass from the 1930s is still working so I'm a bit miffed. Though of course the plastimo is heaps more accurate in getting a bearing.

BP, flog everything? How long does it take you to heave to? It's a part of my briefing when people come aboard and I make sure they can do it.

Workups from the chart and predicted tide times will only ever get an approximation. It's an NP-hard problem in fluid dynamics and depends on such things as temperature, atmospheric pressure, local winds, freshwater flows into estuaries, far off storms, whether you're vaccinated etc. I learnt a bit about such workups as a volunteer on the Spirit of New Zealand which I highly recommend to everyone. In other words, it's a bit of an art that also involves local knowledge. I'm afraid I don't know what the error margins are.
