Check out my facebook page dan scoltock i dont know how to post photos,i had to motor over no wind came home via lyttelton as strong northerlys all the way home couldnt get through cook straight,storm jib and triple reefed main most of the way.washed off all the birdshit though.

I was wondering why no one seems to go out there I popped out for a couple of weeks in feb,was the only yacht there.Was like New Zealand must have been like 100 years ago,ridiculous fishing,clear water,good holding.And only 400 miles out.Seems like an undiscovered paradise.

I dont think so i have a traveller and never move the block cant see any advantage if you have a vang,my boats not a racer though.only disadvantage with 2 mainsheets is lots of rope in your cockpit,rather that than bruised shins though.

If it breaks the bowsprit will just move back about an inch so not too worried.cant fall off too many stays holding it.

Couple of years ago I pulled my bowsprit off to paint it ,the 25mm ss bolt holding it on came out in 2 pieces completely rotted in half.Have smeared new one in grease hope it holds.

Iridium go was very slow and patchy around stewart island last year up to two hours to send a text we werent impressed as they are very expensive to run

Seems to be lacking much sail area I guess he wont need much once he hits the southern ocean.

Masina was edge glued I think she was cedar.A nelson boat builder bought her and gave her a massive makeover I think she is now in Melbourne

Matai is hard as hell some old door steps are matai,Today I was trying to nail into some old stuff even predrilling I was bending nails.

My yacht is for sale on trade me Eendracht 32 foot steel yacht .I motored most of the way to the Chatham islands on her this year no issues would rather have sailed but no wind and sailed home with gale force winds all solo boat handled it no sweat and would do it again if I wasnt busy working.

My father used to own masina he did many miles in her she was a rocket,tiny inside bucket toilet single burner stove.sailed like a dinghy i would feel confident sailing her into her berth.She almost sunk mid tasman when she sailed off a wave and the anchor chain jumped and blew a plank out.Dad was solo and had to pump for 4 days.He went back to steel boats after that.

Auckland must be a bugger of a city to forecast for everytime ive been up there its 4 seasons in one day,I sailed round the south island last year only using their forecasts they were spot on.I think maybe as sailors we are getting a bit soft in the eightys you left when the boat was loaded and just took your hidings.

You can bypass cat1 ,not saying you should but if you register your yacht offshore,for example Amsterdam.Cat 1 doesnt apply.

On passage you don't tack often I have my storm jib up on my inner forestay all the time,when its too windy for the furler I just wind it in and don't have to go forward when its rough

Ive seen wharrams with a stern platform that lowers down on a xmall block and tackle,what ever you do keep it light cats dont like weight.

My old man had a pahi 45 with centreboards and a wishbone boom,he kept her really light it pointed well.When he sold it the new owners sailed her to Lyttelton at 17 knots.Awesome boats if kept light.

Cheers pete agree totally cant beat mk 1 eyeball I mainly sail solo anything that reduces the chances of me being run down has to be good eh.
