  1. Dean Kennedy is also really good.

Thanks Wheels - that the best explanation I've seen for this complex issue!
  3. In 5 months of living aboard (for 3 people) with a Gas Califont and Oven/stove we used 1.5 x 9kg bottles.
  4. In the Piedy with 1.4m draft, we used to plan on 2 hours before high tide and 1.5hrs after high. We touched a few times at the 2hr before high so seemed pretty accurate!
  5. Anyone know why there are 5 brand new swing moorings at Northcote point registered to Westhaven? They are the ones in the purple box below:
  6. Ryobi 18v! They make a 12v>18v charger that fast and there is a huge range of tools that are reasonably priced, but also have a 7 year warranty. One of my favorites in the range is this fan - sooo good when you stuck in the bilge doing a crappy sweaty job! We have two now!
  7. Agreed, Just awesome! Reminds me a little bit of crossing Bream Bay in almost every coastal I've done in an 8.5m Multi! There's always an element of backing off to "Survival mode" for a bit.

I think the MOD70s originally had a hydraulic main sheet (you can see the ram on the boom in that video) and it was very slow to release, causing that and the spindrift capsize. They changed the system to act quicker and gave the helm a dump button too I think.

I was impressed at how all the big crusing Multis pushed this year. Kotuku came passed us on Lucifer (8.5m Tri) at Rangi light with the Genny on and flying a hull. And it wasn't "flying a hull while bearing away" it was "flying a hull and just leaning on it" Romanza did a huge catchup job to finish within sight of the other big multis, considering they broke a Zero halyard on the start and only passed us in Bream Bay when we could no longer see the other big multis. I took a couple of photos of Apache as I liked her mooring setup but they show what a slim, light boat she must be.
  10. https://www.stuff.co.nz/travel/travel-troubles/117140620/missing-kiwi-tourist-found-floating-in-inflatable-dinghy-off-crete Glad shes OK. Wonder why it took 2 days to find her?
  11. The stainless ones will cause a lot of heat and resistance. I made some copper washers and they have worked well as a temporary fix till we got back to NZ to find the proper fuses.
  12. Well, I wasn't entirely wrong as it was definitely a kite off the start. I'd actually bet you it was a masthead kite all the way to Tiri and I was definitely wrong there!
  13. We've been cruising with NV in Tonga and Fiji and shes a cool boat if you like going fast! Even with the 4.2m draft they made it into almost all the anchorages we did with our 44ft Cat. The boat has a mooring in Opua which seems pretty reasonably priced and is on the Westhaven pile moorings till they are removed.
  14. Bit of sailing footage of her from the Musket Cover regatta in Fiji: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvPsvxE-_IQ She was the first to finish in the Round Malolo island but was given a 10min penalty for missing a island round mark and ended up second to a Kiwi boat NV.
  15. I think the view on this may have changed in some circumstances. Two inspectors told me that they considered properly installed windows to be as strong as the deck itself. Our windows are large but are reinforced safety glass. We broke one last year by hitting the very edge with a metal buckle on a flapping canvas. The outer layer broke into safety glass size bits over a couple of minutes, but the inner pane stayed solid. Over the next 24 hours, the inner layer slowly shattered and the window lost strength. We cut our emergency plywood panel to shape and screwed/sika it to replaced the win
  16. The Herald reporting in this case seem to be accurate. A friend visited the survivors in hospital and the story told to them first hand matches the herald story. I'm off to make a donation to Westpac Helicopters as those guys are absolute heros. The whole response looks perfect, from airforce, Wetpac and Coastguard who were half way out there when they were picked up. Its all a bit bloody close to home, as we arrived back 5 days before them. I wonder how my 44ft cat would have coped in those circumstances. My guess is it'd either be swamped with smashed in windows or would have been up
  17. I've been through two protests where "serious damage" occurred and therefore no flags were needed to be flown for a valid protest. In both outcomes the protest hearing decision was forwarded to my insurance company, along with a note to say "a panel of rule experts found the incident was not my fault" and in both cases we did not have to pay any excess. In the first incident the damage was a 50footers mainsail ripped in two as our mast went through it. Second incident was a port/stb collision where our 8.5m cat lost the front 0.5m of one hull. Interesting thing about this protest was t
  18. I wonder how does RCCNZ get in touch with nearby yachts in these situations? We sail around with the VHF on 16 but not the SSB. I guess Customs have our sat phone details but how do they know we're nearby? AIS from the satelites?

  20. We were wondering this for Minerva reef while stuck there for 10 days in May. Officially claimed by Tonga but no shore to go ashore on. Could you sail there and sail back to Nz without checking in/out?
  21. This is why you need an inner forestay with a deep reef!
  22. Not the greatest photos but kind of show the Freedom setup. We lost a mast through not having a reliable topmast backstay and sidestay setup so it is pretty important to get right if your going to use masthead gear.
  23. We arrived with a clean bottom and showed them a entry in the log book that we had cleaned the boat ourselves the week before we left. I think the key is to arrive clean!
  24. Actually, it looks like the Unitary Plan contains rules that allow ("P" for Permitted) for a "Grid" or "Careening" away from sensitive coastal areas (SEA M1, ONC, etc) The proviso is that you collect the runoff as far as practical with drop sheets, etc: And that you don't do it don't do it near any of the islands (Pr mean prohibited activity)
  25. Yep, just make sure you do it in accordance with these easy to understand rules from the unitary plan............ I speak "planner" almost fluently and I'm bamboozled by that rule set!
