  1. On High-n-Fibre, we started in a similar setup to DP - i.e almost a sportboat but met the trailer yacht rule. 800kg boat overall with 400kg of it in the bulb. To race as a sportboat, we added one trapeze, then two, then three and finally 4 - the boat just loved them. Way easier than hiking and turbos the boat. For SSANZ, Route 66 we would go back trailer yacht mode and remove them. Super easy to retrofit. Where the T-bar went through the rig for the sidestays, we just poked some 8mm dynex through the gap and out the other side, tied a stopper knot that stopped it going back thro
  2. When I had High-n-Fibre (Vickers 7m) we used to keep it at Westhaven boat ramp. That Boatramp is hard to beat with long fingers giving pleaty of room to move the boat right to the far end while sorting out keels, sails etc. I think HnF used to draw 1.9m and we could launch and retrieve is all but the extreme low tides (0.3-0.4m). In those, we'd leave the crane on the the end of the W pier. The Concrete ramp does come to a sudden end and then there is a drop off of about 0.5m, which can work to your advantage in a low tide. You can get the bow just on to the dock to get the keel cran
  3. They left the the AIS on fo the whole trip! 🙄 From Northland Radios Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/northlandmaritimeradio.nz/
  4. Urban Cowboy seems like a bloody good deal at 99k! https://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/boats-marine/yachts/keeler/auction-2598987134.htm?rsqid=2551a3c704644c3c9675841cbab5bc37-001
  5. Looking for a Rudder angle sensor to work with a Simrad Autopilot (AP12). Ideally a NMEA2000 type, but it can also take an non NMEA 2000 sensor, a two wire RF300. PM here or 021 229 4005 Thanks!
  6. Hmm, I think we had a melges 24 section in High-n-Fibre and its a lot bigger than the sections they used in the Shaw 650s. I don't think a shaw 650 bulb will be heavy enough to make it self righting. Well done 44Fourty on the Route 66 race. Third mono over the line is awesome for a little boat. We were 5th on line in High-n-Fibre (Vickers 7m) in 2013.

    Proa

Cool looking boat. I'll be interested to hear your feedback on the proa concept after you've had it for a while as you're a very educated multihuler!
  8. What does a MADD Pack contain?
  9. Dean Kennedy is also really good.

Thanks Wheels - that the best explanation I've seen for this complex issue!
  11. In 5 months of living aboard (for 3 people) with a Gas Califont and Oven/stove we used 1.5 x 9kg bottles.
  12. In the Piedy with 1.4m draft, we used to plan on 2 hours before high tide and 1.5hrs after high. We touched a few times at the 2hr before high so seemed pretty accurate!
  13. Anyone know why there are 5 brand new swing moorings at Northcote point registered to Westhaven? They are the ones in the purple box below:
  14. Ryobi 18v! They make a 12v>18v charger that fast and there is a huge range of tools that are reasonably priced, but also have a 7 year warranty. One of my favorites in the range is this fan - sooo good when you stuck in the bilge doing a crappy sweaty job! We have two now!
  15. Agreed, Just awesome! Reminds me a little bit of crossing Bream Bay in almost every coastal I've done in an 8.5m Multi! There's always an element of backing off to "Survival mode" for a bit.

I think the MOD70s originally had a hydraulic main sheet (you can see the ram on the boom in that video) and it was very slow to release, causing that and the spindrift capsize. They changed the system to act quicker and gave the helm a dump button too I think.

I was impressed at how all the big crusing Multis pushed this year. Kotuku came passed us on Lucifer (8.5m Tri) at Rangi light with the Genny on and flying a hull. And it wasn't "flying a hull while bearing away" it was "flying a hull and just leaning on it" Romanza did a huge catchup job to finish within sight of the other big multis, considering they broke a Zero halyard on the start and only passed us in Bream Bay when we could no longer see the other big multis. I took a couple of photos of Apache as I liked her mooring setup but they show what a slim, light boat she must be.
  18. https://www.stuff.co.nz/travel/travel-troubles/117140620/missing-kiwi-tourist-found-floating-in-inflatable-dinghy-off-crete Glad shes OK. Wonder why it took 2 days to find her?
  19. The stainless ones will cause a lot of heat and resistance. I made some copper washers and they have worked well as a temporary fix till we got back to NZ to find the proper fuses.
  20. Well, I wasn't entirely wrong as it was definitely a kite off the start. I'd actually bet you it was a masthead kite all the way to Tiri and I was definitely wrong there!
  21. We've been cruising with NV in Tonga and Fiji and shes a cool boat if you like going fast! Even with the 4.2m draft they made it into almost all the anchorages we did with our 44ft Cat. The boat has a mooring in Opua which seems pretty reasonably priced and is on the Westhaven pile moorings till they are removed.
  22. Bit of sailing footage of her from the Musket Cover regatta in Fiji: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvPsvxE-_IQ She was the first to finish in the Round Malolo island but was given a 10min penalty for missing a island round mark and ended up second to a Kiwi boat NV.
  23. I think the view on this may have changed in some circumstances. Two inspectors told me that they considered properly installed windows to be as strong as the deck itself. Our windows are large but are reinforced safety glass. We broke one last year by hitting the very edge with a metal buckle on a flapping canvas. The outer layer broke into safety glass size bits over a couple of minutes, but the inner pane stayed solid. Over the next 24 hours, the inner layer slowly shattered and the window lost strength. We cut our emergency plywood panel to shape and screwed/sika it to replaced the win
  24. The Herald reporting in this case seem to be accurate. A friend visited the survivors in hospital and the story told to them first hand matches the herald story. I'm off to make a donation to Westpac Helicopters as those guys are absolute heros. The whole response looks perfect, from airforce, Wetpac and Coastguard who were half way out there when they were picked up. Its all a bit bloody close to home, as we arrived back 5 days before them. I wonder how my 44ft cat would have coped in those circumstances. My guess is it'd either be swamped with smashed in windows or would have been up
