Something sensible, Hauraki Gulf, east North NZ, while we save for Cat?
ballystick replied to TwoSail's topic in MarineTalk
how about this Trimaran, bought for the berth in Tauranga and it is being almost given away?? https://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/boats-marine/yachts/multihull/auction-2189850800.htm?rsqid=292c282d406d49d2a9f796e02104012f-003 -
How many are in Auckland, what other probems have you experienced that could be avoided with some early mods?
-
Check this new yacht about to get wet, looks pretty nice!
-
It doesn't look to have the pox, most older fibreglass boats can get blistering rather than the osmosis type thing that occurred on boats older than these. Actually reading the report and sorting out the actual faults clears the situation - as spoken by a fellow Farr 38 owner!
-
Good idea Jon, similar to Legends but slightly more race orientated than the Legends but quite different to the original race. Need some feedback now!
-
The Legends format is so different from any other race, motoring segments allowed etc. Also, how could the race be run? Akld to Mercs and back also Tauranga to Mercs and back? A possible event could run but in what form?

The first Nissan Leaf charge system can be set to 80% so as to reduce battery degradation.

A Farr 38 on Trademe looks to be a super good buy for a person with the skills https://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/boats-marine/yachts/keeler/auction-2186431355.htm?rsqid=9dae92b4904047a5a33da1fdeeb6bad1-002

Do you think if it was Cat 4 plus like the Coastal if it would make a difference?

Blaydon Racer now, That's a tri with a special history. Going pretty cheaply for sure.
-
There's a multi in Tauranga called Ladyhawk, is this the type of tri or is it too big and slow https://www.boatdesigner.co.nz/reviews/bw2001.htm

I have a small pack, a little smaller than the above picture. It is a Lithium Cobalt type ($100) which is supposed to be the worst. It is amazing, jumpstarted my boat (Yanmar 40 hp) and many cars in the Marina carpark. It sruggles when there is a completely flat battery so if you wait for around 20 secs it usually succeeds. Also, it charges up cell phones and devices. There is a warning not to leave it connected for over 10 seconds after starting and I think that is the most dangerous thing to do as far as I can see. It is rated to 300A so I used my clamp meter to measure the current and it

Not sure on details sorry, I will have to call him. I think it was the house battery though
-
The battery was on a smart charger which was disconnected from the 240V supply and then the engine was started. A possible severe battery cell imbalance maybe?
-
It was a local yachtie and I don't know the details but it was quite seriously worrying. Looks to have been a short somewhere so I was looking for suggestions.
-
What do you think would have caused this battery meltdown on the weekend

Great photo of Tweety Bird earlier in the post - now racing in Tauranga.

I have a speaker mounted in the cockpit but it is subject to damage from crew and weather. A possibility could be a surface? speaker (flat panel exciter) that mounts internally against a free panel which turns into the speaker when the magnetron vibrates, so there is no orifice in the panel that may leak. The sound quality is poor in deeper sounds but ok speaking levels. Available from Jaycar for around $16.00. A boat nearby has a whole swarm of them stuck inside the boat in the cockpit and sounds great.

Thanks KM, good info. Should I attach it to the sliding slot with a cable tie or directly to the smaller end orifice?
-
Thanks for sharing your experiences, especially Fish with his testing especially. Looks like a Manson it will be!

I'm looking at replacing my Manson 40 plough on my Farr 38 with a Manson Supreme as the plough tends to skip rather than dig especialy on hard packed sea beds. It's on 40 metres of 10 mm chain, but I may be able to buy a 25 rather than the recommended 35 which doesn't fit in the locker. Would the 25 have superior holding to the 40 plough?
