  1. I did a bit on this a while ago when I needed to put my mast in. Boat was already in the water and most yards wanted me to be lifted out, crane mast in, then lift back in. Found Gulf Harbour was the best option where we could be in the travellift pen and use the arm on the travellift. The guys at GH Rigging were very good to deal with, did a great job.
  2. So, you want to make something that is effective, safe and cheap. Why not just say so. WTF is "ground-truthing" anyway, I don't think we had that in my day....?
  3. Thinking about Marlborough Sounds for a couple of months. Not a sailing destination but gives us a good trip to and from Northland/Auckland.
  4. Has anyone seen the proposed time frame for these changes?
  5. Sorry, saw this topic covered in Cruising section
  6. Sadly, the "lifejacket while in sight of a puddle" brigade is never going to let that happen.

    Yanmar

Very happy with my Beta. Any engine manufacturer that has built 8 million-plus engines has worked out a few things. Picked up some oil filters at the Engine Room, cheaper than SuperCheap Auto! If you translated this to cars - Beta = Toyota Corolla, Yanmar = Alfa Romeo. Alfa owners love driving their cars - to the workshop to have them fixed.
  8. Sorry, stopped reading 8>)
  9. But where are the lifejackets? The permits? The qualifications laminated in triplicate? The frigging buckets with frickin' lanyards? How dare they have that much fun without being compliant!
  10. I'd imagine a dowel has great speed due to its favourable waterline length/beam.
  11. Interesting thread, thank you BP for the hard yards. It would be interesting to know if there is a difference in the number of rescues between the yachts leaving NZ versus the yachts heading to NZ. The fact being that NZ registered yachts need a Cert to leave, but not to arrive. When I bought my boat in from Hawaii, there would be no way in hell it would have passed a Cat 1 inspection. Would a skipper run through the Cat 1 manual prior to leaving Fiji on the way home, after a circumnavigation? I think not. So we have a system set up to improve safety standards through regulation,

Matt what brand/model did you install?
  13. Changing to a Lithium system means changing your entire set of battery assumptions. With a FLA system you are always chasing the elusive 100% SOC. With LiFePO4 chasing 100% SOC is not really desirable.
  14. A great tip, thanks! Classic Boat one of the best nautical reads around. Boat Porn.

    Panuku upside

One thing they appear to be good at is plumping their own work, which is not that surprising. As an un-elected body with seemingly wide ranging powers, Panuku concerns me greatly. You might agree with some or all of what they do, but do the majority of Aucklanders? Publicly owned assets are owned collectively and it doesn't feel right to me when these assets are disposed of with a complete lack of transparency. There is also the potential for corruption, as these Panuku people seem to be in bed with the "developers". As for the tank farm, a great opportunity missed to create some aweso
  16. If it is still working, wrap it in rescue tape. I've done it to my Icoms, which have the same issue, I wonder if they were made by the same manufacturer.
  17. Agree, anything to stop that sunlight!
  18. Would it not be reasonable to ask Panuku (Maori Language Week - it translates as "Bunch of Thieving F$%^ers") to release their economic benefit workings for public scrutiny. It would be interesting to watch the cockroaches run for the nearest cover.
  19. Does anyone actually do that these days? https://www.maritimenz.govt.nz/commercial/safety/safety-management-systems/recognised-surveyors/recognised-compass-adjusters.asp
  20. Autostream is adjustable in forward and reverse so this issue should never happen. TBH I'm a little confused as to why the Kiwiprop would stall out any engine when going into reverse - surely the pitch is different in reverse to allow for the different gear ratio in reverse? Or is it something to do with bangin' it into reverse at 6 knots?
  21. I went through this years ago for my 44' cruising boat. Ended up with an Autostream stainless steel 3 blade feathering. I'm very happy with it. Pitch is adjustable in the water. Stops the boat in reverse like a dream. It was half the price of a Maxprop and cheaper than a Gori. My engine is too big for a Kiwiprop. One thing I have heard regarding the Gori "Overdrive" facility is that it shags your gearbox, which don't like going forward/reverse/forward at cruising revs. Haven't witnessed it myself but it was from a reliable source. Autostream is made in Melbourne. http://www.seahaw
  22. One of my favourite tools - small Husky ratchet, the one with a 1/4 drive on one side and 1/8 on the other. Plastic bar with the relevant 1/8 drive sockets. The only tool used for Jubilee clips.
  23. Solution dyed nylon. Un-stainable and yet, nice underfoot.
