  1. just to clarify this subject a bit more, if you are having work done on an existing installation then only the work performed must comply with the current regs. It does not trigger a requirement to upgrade the complete installation to the new regs. If a Gas Fitter makes this claim ask him to show you where in the regulations this is stated. Obviously if something is intrinsically unsafe eg a gas locker that does not drain overboard at all, then it will need to be addressed.
  2. There are 2 versions, the original Kiwi Breeze, Polly and others at 12m, and then the stretched version at 13m, Business First and the one on trademe (rather overpriced in my view)
  3. Finding that headroom will be a bit of a challenge, you will need to look for a heavier displacement yacht. Mull/Chico 40 perhaps, or if you can stretch the length Cav/Davidson 45 centre cockpit
  4. Actually it was worse with the Kahawai, they were sold to Australia to use as bait for the cray fishing industry!

    Antifouling

Jotun would have to be to be the worst antifouling ever made. Of the conventional products I am still hearing good reports about Altex No 5 and from one user of Micron AP. As has been discussed previously Micron 66 used to be the gold standard, but Micron 77 is no where near as effective. Good to hear that Fish is happy with Copper Coat, as I have heard first hand from quite a few unhappy users. Common feedback seems to be it is good for about 3 years and thereafter not very effective. Maybe they have changed their brew over time
  6. The Duo Charge is a bit more than a fancy VSR, you could say it is a combination of a VSR and a Blocking Diode as it does not allow a reverse flow of current from the recipient battery, important in my case to keep the start battery fully charged.
  7. another option is one of these http://www.balmar.net/products/digital-duo-charge/ I have 3 battery banks and 2 alternators. The house bank has a separate large frame alternator. The regular engine alternator is set up to feed the "winch" battery (anchor and halyard winches). This Duo Charger then charges the start battery from the winch battery.
  8. Australia is a "walk in the park", you want to try importing something into Brazil. The list of tariff classifications is over 1000 pages and then there are the arguments about which tariff is applicable. Then there are all the other taxes to be considered, all with an associated processing cost....

  10. If you really want to conserve water: 1. Don't use the dishwasher (if you have one) 2. Don't use the washing machine - take washing to a laundromat 3. 2 minute showers 4.If you are waiting for hot water to come thru the tap have a container to catch the initial cold water, I always have a bucket in the shower and water bottle beside the kitchen sink 5. one glass of water for teeth cleaning, not a running tap 6.Don't flush the loo every time you have a pee (this may encounter female resistance)
  11. your tank volume in m3 is pii x r squared x height. Thumbsuck rule for house hold consumption is 200litres/person/day. Tank users are usually more like boaties in minimising water usage, however if you have teenage daughters who all love long showers the sky is the limit.
  12. Facet fuel pump https://www.amazon.com/Facet-Solid-1-5-4Psi-30-48Cm-195-1310/dp/B01DLZZGOK/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=facet+fuel+pump+12v&qid=1581403407&sr=8-2 used to have one of these on my previous long forgotten VW Golf diesel Another option is to fit a primary filter housing with a primer pump, eg CAV https://www.ssldieselparts.co.uk/primers-primers-with-filters-c-263_169.html RACOR also make them, I have one feeding my current Yanmar
  13. Mike Menzies if he is still working. Sorry to hear Ray has downed tools, he was the best.
  14. I believe under one of the international maritime agreements, a country's national marine body has the legal right to detain a vessel if it is not considered to be seaworthy. I know this has been exercised in Australia a couple of times, and possibly NZ with some of the dodgy chartered foreign fishing boats

    Shore power

this is a schematic from ABYC guidelines showing a marine transformer with an isolated earth per Wheels description note this is from USA so wire colours and voltage are different but connections are the same. My preference where possible is a transformer of this type as they maintain the ground isolation from the shore. A galvanic isolator is effectively a one use item, typically once it has conducted a fault current it does not provide protection and should be replaced. Just to confuse matters there are 2 types, one fails open after use, the other fails closed.
  16. same as John B, used one for 5 mths last year in the Sth Pacific. Mine was set up by a guy who knew his way around the GO so that was quite painless. Generally worked well within its limitations, using it for emails, Predictwind weather and its tracking function. Found it useful amongst the islands to keep in touch with home when the local cell networks were either out of range or not functioning. Latency was an issue when trying to make calls, I could hear the person at the end of the call but they could not hear me. Previous year using exact same modem call performance was better. Be aw

    Shore power

just for clarification, the Neutral and Earth are only connected on board the vessel when you are generating power on board, by way of a generator or inverter, and this is done within the equipment, not at the switchboard. This connection is open if this equipment is not in service.

    Shore power

Not sure if it is exactly what you are asking, the code does permit Non Neutral Earthed Systems (IT System) under certain circumstances when continuity of service is required. It has strict requirements for fault protection and "touch" voltage. Not likely to be a typical situation for our size of boats

    Shore power

IT, respectfully wish to differ on this point - all craft require a submerged ground plate to satisfy Equipotential Bonding requirements, ref AS/NZS 3004.2 2008 10.1.2 Earthing of the protective conductor in non-metal boats The protective conductor shall be connected to an earthing electrode that comprises a solid uncoated conductor having a contact area with the water of at least 0.1 m2, a thickness of at least 5 mm and a width of at least 20 mm secured to the outside of the hull in an area reserved for this purpose and located below the light-load water line so that it is immersed under

    Shore power

Ref your second query, the shore power AC neutral is not directly connected to the boats DC negative, rather the shore power earth is typically connected to the boat's ground which will usually be connected to the DC negative. Metal boats are the exception. Under the NZ AC supply system (Wheels wrote a long post about this some time ago) the Neutral and the Earth are connected at the point of generation, so in the case of shorepower this connection is made somewhere on shore. If you have on board "generation" by way of an inverter or fixed generator, then this connection takes place within th

    Shore power

The standard does not make reference to the location of the inlet socket, merely states that it shall be rated to IP 56 whether connected to the shore power lead or not. Mine is an IP56 rated inlet inside a stern locker and has always passed. Interesting discovery on the applicable standard, this is cited in the Electrical Safety Regulations 2010 (with subsequent minor non technical amendments issued 2018) as AS/NZS 3004.2 2008 (without amendment). So the latest revision of the AS/ NZS 3004.2 (2014) does not actually apply where EWOF's are concerned. See here with some interesting com
  22. I agree with Kevin, this is Consumer Guarantees Act application. Unfortunately all of these pumps are pretty much throw away and pressure switches have always been a problem. I tried to get a replacement motor for a Jabsco pump a while ago but no luck. Those Seaflows are a cheap knock off pump I suggest looking at a Johnson Pump as a replacement, they seem to be a bit more robust
  23. hope to head that way Friday evening and should be a good sail from Sandspit
  24. Older marinas were generally built to fit a boat of the notional size. Now the berth size is just that - the size of the berth, you need to deduct 0.5-1.00m for the boat size to fit. Westpark/Hobsonville has the most "generous" berths I have come across, I have seen a 15m yacht in a 14m berth there.
