  1. She was well known for the Herreshoff problem of opening up when pressed on the wind, it happened to her twice when leaving NZ on different trips . A great boat for the tall ships race in the Bay each year, but a lifetimes work to prepare her for sea again. Vos's built three of them in the 60's each a different method, for the apprentices to learn. The cold molded one would be the pick of them.
  2. They have dived on mine when I didnt have a receipt out in the Bay at anchor , they came up and said its spotless after I refused to let them board. No power to stop you unless you are a marina person, and I believe have given up the spot diving lately as all the nasty creatures are in the bay and in fact they have introduced the square barnacles which are still rare in Auckland.
  3. Looks like a Gougeon build from around that time, no mention of the construction but the average American is not into natural composites 😉
  4. Yes Marelon, Zytel or similar glass reinforced Nylons best bet, and as above go for black.
  5. Well you would hope that Maritime NZ is writing that into the new leccy ferry rules that they are making up at present while the ferry is in use......Something like dont leave the dock when flashing green light he goes red 😉
  6. We have been looking for more rail dollys 😄
  7. Apparently having " integration issues" I guess that is why they had to integrate the tow line from the police RIB with the bollard on the bow.... This craft is dependent on a big overnight charge to enable the days sailings with minimal top up between, if for some reason the overnight one wasnt complete..... Some good lessons here for the Auckland ones under construction paid for by you and me. Lucky there wasnt a light Wellington zephyr blowing....
  8. As have Iorangi and Innismara
  9. It appears I too may be land based down there, starting to look like a superb event
  10. I have done a (not exhaustive) study during the last 20 months and feel I have a reasonable understanding of the new language "Daltonese" When he says I want to talk to someone sensible at the council about an event here, translation is : The ratepayers can pay and Matteo and I can bank, and the Squadron will back me up on this. 😊
  11. The weather at the time was such that the large Whangarei helicopter had to consider how to manage the mission -certainly not 10 knots till well into the next day. There are a lot of 'rogue' waves straight off the Surville cliffs in a wild Nor easter or in fact off a shoreline when the swells feel the ground close in...
  12. Unlikely to be a Blakes seacock on a Lotus, probably a Chatfield one.
  13. Many of the commercial skippers (non charter) up there have a low opinion of him.
  14. And this time last year 500 tons of cheap coal coming into the POA for Huntly per week, not sure how much this year, lets stay away from greenwashing.
  15. Golden Globe making their way hard on the wind south, with all this on the nose stuff I bet they wish they were in a Townson , -oh thats right hull shape too modern for the rules.
  16. And is the vessel currently in survey with an up to date MOSS cert?
  17. $21 Million plus the onshore electric substation, and 64 litres of Caterpillar power -sort of green 😉
  18. That particular hull style does not have a good record in NZ, very low freeboard everyone rushing to one side means the AVS is reached very early as the tubes go under. Funny if they hit a whale that neither outboard kicked up..
  19. Ex Elly is of course correct, getting muddled in old age
  20. For those interested this event is underway , (solo around the world non stop no electronic nav)
  21. The key is that he was not on the mooring offered by the council, but another similar, the council just wanted it to go away so paid. As far as a competent yachtsman and a loveable rogue goes, the first three mutinies he suffered points the other way. I wonder if Classique is still tied up at Robertsons (the salvage yard ?? referred to in the Herald where she has resided since the harbour bridge rest)
