  1. A different thing happened to my friend's Noelex. The centre bolt broke, which left the centreboard swinging beneath the boat on the cable! I think they sailed in (unsteadily) into the shallows then tipped the boat on it's side and pushed the centreboard in then lashed it.
  2. People said the same thing before Bermuda, and then everyone loved it.
  3. Give Bailey's a call. They are brokers, so can give you a range of options from different companies. https://www.baileysinsurance.co.nz/
  4. Beating up the Wairarapa coast Thu Oct 01 2020 I was woken at 0200 by the sound of the wind generator whirring happily away. Up on deck I could feel a steady breeze coming from the NW so I released the sheets and off we went through the starry night towards Cape Palliser. I figured the wind would probably die when we came into the lee of the cape and sure enough we were becalmed all morning. I have pretty much sailed into the centre of a high and it is going to be a bit of a challenge getting up the coast to East Cape. With the sun out and time on my hands I pulled all the wet s
  5. Good chance for him to rest and tidy up.
  6. So glad he survived the night! Must have been horrible. His major problem was caused by the furler malfunctioning. Shows that you need a good furling system to survive 60 knots. However the top boats in the Golden Globe Race all used furlers, except one.
  7. The wind station at the end of Banks Peninsula was gusting 40 knots at 8am, and now up to 60knots...
  8. Sunrise and big seas Tue Sep 29 2020 All night we have been racing before the wind and waves. Every now and then I have to get out in the cockpit and gybe over the genoa to keep us on course. The wind is bone chillingly cold and when all is in order I dive gratefully into the warmth of the cabin below to thaw out my freezing hands. Sunrise brings an impressive sight. Huge seas are rearing up behind us, breaking in tumbling white avalanches. Foam is streaked along the surface by the 35 knt wind and the boat is carving a roaring wake down the face of the waves as we reach speeds u
  9. Heading for Banks Peninsula Mon Sep 28 2020 The dogleg into the coast didn’t really achieve much although I did have a nice flat run up the coast to Oamaru. I am not sure what happened to the vortex but quite likely things were much livelier further out to sea. What I thought was rain coming over the hills was actually snow. The hills were dusted in white almost down to sea level. No wonder my hands were cold handling the sheets and working the winches. Eventually the wind settled in blowing a steady 30 knts out of the SW and I have set a course dead downwind for Banks Penins
  10. Mike Delamore grew up on Great Mercury Island before moving to Waiheke in 1966 when his family bought the Matiatia Farm. After travelling around the world across both land and sea, he returned permanently to Waiheke in the 1980s to raise a family and work on what would become the Fossil Bay Farm, as well as establish the Waiheke Island Steiner School and Kindergarten. After a long career in sailing that included time as a Fullers ferry captain and helming Super Yachts across the Atlantic, Mike retired from professional sailing several years ago to focus on his accommodation business, Foss
  11. A rough entry to Thompson Sound
  12. I reckon he should do the next Golden Globe Race. His boat probably wouldn't qualify though...
  13. He chose this time of year because he can't go to UK to do canal boating, which he does every winter.
  14. Yep no engine, broken water pump that can't be fixed, and a wet bunk, and now hove-to slowing down to avoid bad weather ahead. http://waihekeworkingsail.org/mikes-journey/follow-mike/
  15. The official report mentioned that the Germans were in "unfortunate circumstances". So they been kicked out of NZ, may never be allowed to return, and had their boat confiscated, probably to be sold by customs, and they may receive none of the proceeds. Seems pretty harsh to me.
  16. Sounds like you are now Christmas Winners! 😀
  17. Heading for the Catlins coast Sun Sep 27 2020 Its 0430 and I left the wharf at Bluff an hour ago. It was a clear starry night with a half moon and I made my way out of the harbour using the plotter, radar and the leading lights. This time I had the tide with me and in no time at all it seemed I was clear of the channel and heading across the shallow shoal that guards the entrance on a course to Waipapa Point. Now it may seem inadvisable to leave a safe port with a gale warning in force but there is a method to my madness. The wind is blowing from the North, straight off the l
  18. Bluff - " The Start of State Highway One" Sat Sep 26 2020 I made it into Bluff. Not without some difficulty I might add. The harbour has a very fast tidal stream running up to 7knts at times and with wind against tide I have seen two metre standing waves in the channel. Today was about average so I was motoring at 5 knots against a 4 knt outgoing tide. If you do the maths you can see I wasn’t going very fast. It took me two hours to get from the entrance to the fuel wharf - a distance of three miles. Bluff is also very industrial around the wharves. This area is the preserve of

  20. Three Germans who arrived in their yacht at Opua have been arrested and put on a plane back to Germany. This doesn't look good for other cruisers. Are they trying to make an example of them?
  21. Yes, and snow coming. He may have to hole up for the next five days. Should improve later next week.
  22. Hopefully Australia will let them in?
  23. Looks like the pacific cruisers are now banned from coming to NZ this season... Foreign yachties say lives now at risk from NZ decision "Foreign yachties seeking refuge in New Zealand from seasonal Pacific cyclones are baffled by the response not to let them in." "The club said lives and property were at risk, but the latest official response revealed a misunderstanding around the logistics of boat travel." https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/426508/foreign-yachties-say-lives-now-at-risk-from-nz-decision
