  1. Regarding Shearer Rock buoy, old charts used to show a round buoy, plus an eastern cardinal mark in the same area. On the latest chart, the round buoy has gone, leaving just the East cardinal mark.
  2. That boat has 4 foils, as opposed to 3 on the AC75. Looks like there is probably some lead in the central 'keel', making the side foils lighter, removing the need to have human or electric grinders to control those.
  3. Thanks for that. In previous years there was only one combined NOR/SI. Looking forward to the SI's so we can find out where the start and finish lines are, what the starting order is, what colour flag we need to buy, and radio sched details, and what the divisions are.

More threats to Auckland's resident leopard seal after sunken dinghy Auckland's resident leopard seal has received more threats against her life after a dinghy sunk, off Herald Island, on Wednesday night. It is believed that an inflatable dingy that slowly sunk on Wednesday night was popped by Owha, prompting threats, including the use of a firearm. https://www.stuff.co.nz/auckland/local-news/300042182/more-threats-to-aucklands-resident-leopard-seal-after-sunken-dinghy

  6. Probably a good idea to follow the Yachting New Zealand Safety Regulations of Sailing 2017–2020 19.07 Navigation lights on all boats shall be fitted no lower than the height of the upper lifelines. https://www.yachtingnz.org.nz/sites/default/files/2018-10/YNZ Safety Regulations of Sailing 17-20 (Final) (small).pdf https://www.yachtingnz.org.nz/resources/yachting-new-zealand-safety-regulations-sailing-2017-2020
  7. Is there a typo in the Notice of Race? Lewmar Doyle Sails Short Course: Start passing Rangitoto Island (starboard), Shearers Rock Buoy (starboard), Haystack (Orapapa) Island, Motuihe Island (starboard), Browns Island (port), Motukorea Buoy (starboard) to the finish (approx. 39nm) Since it does not state which side to leave the Haystack, we can effectively ignore this mark of the course! 😉
  8. HMS Aotearoa arrives tomorrow. The navy has extended the wharf at Devonport by 50m for it. Vessel is 173m long, has 100 bunks, 15 knots speed, 8.4m draft. The watermakers can produce 100,000 litres fresh water per day. https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/300040365/hmnzs-aotearoa-navys-largest-ever-ship-finally-on-its-way-to-new-zealand
  9. Would it be possible to make a copy with a 3D printer?
  10. Shackleton's Captain is a good documentary about the kiwi Frank Worsley who saved Shackleton and his crew through good seamanship and navigation.
  11. Do they all have to go into quarantine?
  12. Yep our depth works, but is permanently 2.3m
  13. We pull our lines forward, and roll the stack pack up for racing. After a while the lazy jack lines become so twisted that they don't auto adjust, so we can't pull them back into proper position. Any tricks to stopping the lines from twisting up?
  14. Alternatively, you could find a deserted island, row ashore and plant a WAVE flag, claim it as your own, and live on fish and coconuts!!!
  15. ORION AND SMUGGLER MARINE AWARDED COSTS Following an almost four-year court battle, the High Court sealed an order for costs against Sealegs of around $500,000, to be paid to Orion and Smuggler Marine by May 26, 2020, or proceedings to liquidate Sealegs will commence. Additionally, a combined damage claim of $11m is being filed against Sealegs. The damage claim arises from the injunction issued in December 2016, which prevented Smuggler, Stryda, Orion and other associated companies from manufacturing and selling amphibious craft. https://boatingnz.co.nz/orion-and-smuggler-marine
  16. Don't blame the retailers for your goods not arriving. The problem is the couriers.
  17. Woohoo, sailing is back under level 2! Winter series starts this weekend at Westhaven. Squadron on Saturday, Richmond on Sunday. Limited to 10 per boat. Contact tracing for all crew. No prizegiving at the club.
  18. Stranded at sea for months due to Covid-19 and refused port three times, sailor docks in Fiji Wong Tetchoong set off from Singapore in February but the coronavirus pandemic meant he could not find anywhere to dock https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/may/05/stranded-at-sea-for-months-due-to-covid-19-and-refused-port-three-times-sailor-docks-in-fiji
  19. Well spotted Deep Purple. Your research has paid off!
  20. All boats must slow down to 5 knots if they want to come within 50m of another vessel. RRS are what allows racing yachts to exceed 5 knots within 50m. In this case RRS overrides colregs. Harrytoms last post is quoting from the YNZ Safety rules. These have no bearing on right of way.
  21. Kelly Klink said some were coming ashore and using the island's scarce resources, including getting their groceries ordered to the island. She said some boaties were being respectful, isolated and self-contained, but others were putting them at risk. "We have a freight boat that comes over on Tuesday. One boat had come over to the island and ordered groceries, and someone from the community had witnessed him coming to get his freight straight off the wharf, 14 banana boxes of food. That's utilising resources that the community needs and our people need to bring their food in," Klink
  22. Incorrect, Peter was only helmsman. Glen Ashby = skipper.
  23. No - he is involved in the anti-AC/ alternative AC/ AC spinoff which goes by the name SailGP...
  24. Poor old John. Got asked to leave the business - 2 weeks later he was dead. Sounds like he had a way with the ladies though!
