  1. I cruise solo or short handed so can’t usually rely on anyone rescuing me, and realise the risk of going over due to human nature, gear failure or whatever reason is real . This sad loss encourages me to reinstate my last chance line, a long floating line with a float and loop on the end, that can be rigged to disconnect the autopilot or Windvane and even release the sheets or round the boat up when weight comes on it. I am not racing or normally sailing particularly fast so although It may not save me if I should go over for any reason and still be conscious at least I would have a chan
  2. I think if I was interested in doing it I would simply sail the same course at the same time keeping out of the way of the entrants and not be encumbered by costs or rules. You could then compare your speed to the others and say well if I had entered I would’ve come 10th or whatever.
  3. Must take a look down at the port tomorrow to see the boats, unfortunately won,t be around to watch the start on Sunday
  4. At least it will be insured, no guarantee they will payout though.
  5. They don’t need much of a battery to start you could have a smaller lead start battery which could be switched connected with your agms only when you want to charge them from the motor. I will hook mine this way as I am going to get a new agm house battery but will have a standard crank and winch battery also with the outboard connected to it.
  6. That’s a good clip lots of people have never put a reef in and are reluctant to try because they are not sure if it will work
  7. And even if you just threw out that 40 metres there’s a good chance you will hook up before you hit land. Most boats will and should have a lot more available ready to use. 40 m chain and 60 plus of rope with the rope being available for use on the sea anchor too is not too much to carry.
  8. I suggested putting out all your anchor gear. If you don’t have the ability or energy to do much more than drifting and if there is land or reef nearby then 100 m or more with an anchor on the end is likely to hook on something before the boat does. When I read the rose noelle story I wondered why they didn’t do it the boat would have stopped before getting smashed on the rocks at Rosalie bay. Not too many places are over 100 m up against the rocks
  9. Shame seems like a waste of a good boat but happily nobody was hurt. Even throwing out all your anchor rope and chain a mile or two off the shore should hold the boat for quite a while on most coasts as a last resort.
  10. The Yamaha 9.9 hi thrust 4 is generally considered the best for bigger boats , I have a fairly late model one on 5 tonne cat and it is great , maybe 6 knots with great bite on the water with the big prop even in reverse, think it is the only one with the bigger prop and 3 to 1 gearbox. Had lots of older ones over the years too and they have been good , around 2 litres an hour and smooth and quiet . I have an older one for sale on trademe now but needs some work and definitely not like a new one which are over 5 k but probably worth it in the long run, cheap compared with a diesel.
  11. Think i saw it heading south on the motorway yesterday maybe headed to kapiti .coast
  12. I repaired a 50 mm tear in an inflatable with white bathroom silicon no patch just smoothed out the silicon at maybe 10 mm thick over the hole. It’s still good 10 years later. You could do that around the edges of your patch instead of removing it.

  14. Great buy glad it didn’t go too cheap
  15. I have always antifouled on the beach but are planning a haul out this year for the first time, I,m thinking that antifoul never seems to last as long when it’s not given enough time to dry before immersion. And if you put on several coats it should last a few years instead of barely one . A couple of years ago we were walking around a Coppercoat ed cat in waist deep water giving it a scrub off Takapuna beach , noticed someone taking photos ,and later got a letter from the harbour master, saying it’s a no no , also got told off at Waiheke. I like to clean the hull in the water with a snork
  16. Since it’s got solar panels they could have left a few lights on , somebody may be happy to tow it in somewhere.
  17. Where is the course we will be around the gulf on our slow Wharram cat around then.
  18. It’s taken a while for the super rich to realise that catamarans are a better way to build a super yacht, most of the mono ones can’t get anywhere near the beach. Now fit the beast with sea leg wheels that retract into the hull and you could just drive it up the beach!
  19. Wharram cats use trimtabs connected by 2 lines from the actuator to a short bar at right angles across the top of the tab .
  20. Should work but operation will be in reverse from if working on tiller, and will need to make sure the tiller pilot is not swung off center too much as the rudder moves. The pilot can be mounted in line with the boat if that works better.
  21. Got some Penrite full synthetic 5w 30 oil which should be more than adequate for my little Honda and Yamaha outboards.
  22. New Plymouth is an easy spot to stop for a rest half way down the West Coast and for most of the trip you can stay far enough away from obstacles to be able to relax a bit. Mana and behind kapiti island may allow a rest if you needed a break or to wait for the right conditions to go across cook straight we got hammered off wairarapa when doing Welly to Auckland and the trip took 10 days with repairs in Napier. New Plymouth to Auckland was an easy 5 or 6 day trip solo with day sailing down the east coast
  23. Been lots of north winds lately, would make an easy run from Reinga to cook straight. About 3 days non stop.
  24. Is that the one that was sold cheap recently on trade me as an unfinished project?
