  1. Bens Black pudding, we will have to wait for April to get real comparisons
  2. Whatever happened to that reptile that was always threatening to enter races?
  3. Last night many of us attended the launch of this new book,it is a wonderful addition to the NZ marine literature collection, if you have enjoyed Des' boats at any time I recommend you grab yourself a copy, make a cup of tea and enjoy the read. There are many parallels in the story for a lot of us who grew up pre 2000 making our own gear and boats and learning along the way.

    A new seal

Yes after listening to Giverny I was impressed by her growing knowledge of them , (there are at least 10 individuals resident around our coastline) she certainly knows a lot more than the DOC pair who spoke at Westhaven in 2016. Her feeling is that they are repopulating our coast and will continue with no one shooting or eating them now.
  5. For Tauranga north I agree with raz88 with the proviso that some areas have changed (silted up) since the updates finished in the Akkers book, still the best guide though.

    A new seal

The Orakei boys found firehoses work, the girl talking next week has turned happy teeth into her lifes work, I hope nothing happens to it...
  7. A true classic, and I see someone is sailing an RM yacht down here to sell (at the other end of the wooden boat displacement spectrum)
  8. Unfortunately you are one of many, I am seriously contemplating downsizing - still have my old boat, and getting rid of the Westhaven bill would be very attractive, the marina is really only for people who dont work or dont have to now. Two years ago in Cowes I priced up hauling a First 45 clean and launch after one week on the hard, convert to Kiwi$ and it was 1/3 of doing the same at Orams. we have too many layers off landlords taking a cut from Westhaven, I too noticed all the modest boats on marinas last year in Honfleur. Its like Parnell gone large on the land so not a down trodden area,
  9. Look forward to seeing if any of the current young Piedy sailors will hang up a good old fashioned squadron kite after the start and let her go... They all seem to run smaller kites now?

    Anchor Warp

If its a normal 88 the anchor winch is Manual, so i would always go for 14mm 3 strand laid polyester strong and it lasts . To keep you there you will require a proper anchor and a good length of short link 8mm chain first (Australian or Italian only) .
  11. I would like to know what is wrong with the above mentioned boats apart from lack of places to park them, as no owner wants to keep them more than a couple of years?

    GERONTIUS

Came up on Crew about 5 years ago, she got down to US$10000.00 then as a lot of the structure has been removed to lighten her for Rum race type sailing and not strong enough to sail back here anymore . Rather flexible was the comment from a Kiwi who had had a look.
  13. Typee is my favourite of his books

    Rainbow II

Well spotted Elly, they obviously forgot the very successful revisited in 2015, where some of us sailed with great cameraderie just like the old days, notably people strolling past the Volvo boats commenting -that cant be the real Rainbow 11 ? When we pointed out her neighbours -Waianiwa then the Farr and Lidgard one tonners they forgot the Volvo boats and came for a look. It was also great to see Bruce Farr, Ron Holland, John Street, Peter Cornes etc get together after all this time. There were one or two old names on our boats too- Chris Bouzaid, Roy Dixon, Ken Fyfe, Rosco Guineven, Kumi Ke
  15. Lustys have a nice Victron MPPT controller that works amazingly well for me.
  16. The agent Sopac has stock, high $20,000 area. My question apart from having to buy it and lay in the big 48V battery pack is how much load on the crank? All modern engines have definite limits to PTO loading and side loading via the multirib belt . Also if this thing is mounted on bracketry off the engine -as it should be to move together how much extra weight on the engine mounts?
  17. Correct, another Panuku cock up, taking from the poor Westhaven boaties and funding this sort of nonsense designed by someone without practical waterfront experience, of course it is now on the backburner even though was promised to be 90% built off site . I believe they may have had trouble getting someone to operate the temp crossing whilst this was being installed...
  18. Great to see new boats that are a bit sporty..
  19. The original Buckle Up was a rocket 31 mk3 built in Duracore for Bill Buckle in Sydney On another note I see Whispers 11 being worked on at Pier 21 ready to hum again soon.
