whitepointer 32
Opunga cove BOI is a good spot in easterly blows
whitepointer 32
Another option is to book a berth in opua marina for a few days, great facilities, we did it a few years ago during a blow, hired a car and did some sightseeing in northland
khayyam 61
I'm seeing big se going south. I'd go boi. You could always go the easy route and jump in the marina.
LBD 78
cannot win a trick... shesh! Survey during the last big rain and now flying to Akl tomorrow to replace rigging and get ready to deliver south.
Black Panther 1,502
Parekura is fine too. Leave early and get around cape Brett. I wouldn't wait.
Above-the-Fold 14
Any thoughts on prep? Pull the bimini and dodger off, and maybe the foresail? Double the docklines? Deflate the dinghy? We're on L dock in Westhaven, so ordinarily we don't get a lot of major wave action but the wind will be roaring, I imagine.

Currently in Tutukaka Harbour, heading North later in the week. What's the best harbour around here to sit out the coming winds? We've thought of Whangamumu Harbour, looks like a good all weather anchorage. Plan to get tucked in by Friday pm. Appreciate the opinion of the assembled wisdom/experience here. (We rode out the storm a week or so ago at Rakino Island in the gulf, windy and lumpy, but OK.) Thanks for your help. We were in Tutukaka for the nasty stuff at New Year's; we just moved into the marina for a few days (Pacific Bay was getting lumpy). If you're not in a hurry, you might consider that. Was nice and quiet and the Angler's Club fish and chips was great. MS
Corella 3
Thanks again; we'll go to BoI on Saturday am and find a snug spot there out of the swell with max wind protection. (Booked into the Opua Marina from the weekend after). Yes, normal storm prep, double secure everything...
waikiore 349
Go to Opunga , you can anchor in close good holding and no fetch.
khayyam 61
Forecast is still extremely nasty. Get tucked up somewhere safe, sooner rather than later.

Central pressure near 960 at landfall in NZ would make it one of our biggest ever, I think. Here's hoping the forecast is crap; either that it doesn't strengthen so much, or the track is wrong, or ideally both!
Psyche 537
Crikey! 960's are usually what you see in the southern ocean in April
Island Time 1,175
Indeed. Think I might remove sails etc, but we'll see what happens in the next couple of days. Some models have the eye passing over Auckland....

twisty 161
We parked in Whangaruru when the first or second one came through after New years. I wouldn't recommend it. The NE swell still managed to get around the corner making it a bit unpleasant. The usual hiding place up behind Motukauri island up the end didn't really work either. If it goes SE there's nowhere to hide in there. Manawaora bay in BOI has always worked for us as there are options if the wind changes.
waikiore 349
Stripped the headsail off the foil last night on the cruiser as it was easier then, than after coming back from Squadron weekend on Sunday, hopefully am being over cautious but having seen the carnage in an Auckland marina when they came loose in a real blow it was an easy decision. I’ve never understood why this simple precaution is not taken by everyone, nor insisted on by the Marina management. At the least it reduces windage on the rig but a few years ago one of these storms clipped Tauranga and the (small) number of headsails that unwrapped was hazardous.
