  1. gosh, imagine that! We got all up tight about it on the water, pethaps carrying out clandestine and nefarious deeds, but failed to notice it docked for 8 weeks in the middle of a secure defence location with its insides hanging out. Phew. International crisis averted. We can eat coissants again.

  2. "French Embassy Breaks Silence..." is a bit of a misleading headline. But of course the Herald (and most papers) trying to spin something into something it's not. How about "French Embassy highlights how unobservant Aucklanders are"

  3. Rob Carpenter won the RNI in a Carpenter 29 called Stormy Dawn sometime in the mid 80's , I think the crew was Simon Willis who also crewed on a previous occasion when they won it sailing Nukuwai which was a Chris White one off, about 7.5 M LOA I think. This was in the days when they gathered in the Devonport Naval Base dry dock before departure. A Carpenter 29 has also been delivered to New Caledonia, I still own a Carpenter 29 after 30+ years.

  4. Hi all, from the skipper. Yacht was at secure anchor in Pohutukawa Bay, Rakino when struck by extreme weather event at around 2040hrs 9/4. Dragged rapidly onto South Island in very high winds and sea. Huge shout out to Rescue Services - Maritime Coordination Centre, Auckland Coastguard Maritime Unit and especially Westpac Rescue Helicopter crew who winched crew to safety in extreme conditions. All crew shell-shocked by severity of event but now fully recovered. Mourning loss of a fantastic yacht. Salvage mid week. Thank you to all who have sent support

  6. Does not matter what electronics you have. The colregs say you must keep watch by all available means - so sight, radar and AIS if you have it etc. People who have radar and "oh I hardly ever use it" risk issues if there is a collision. It's amazing on a boat with modern radar and AIS how often the electronics see stuff the crew on deck dont!

  8. French Embassy breaks silence over mystery discovery of French warship in Hauraki Gulf Speculation from a defence expert that it may have been hunting Chinese submarines operating near New Zealand waters. After questions from the Herald, the embassy released a statement this afternoon saying the ship was completing sea trials after two months of maintenance at a Devonport shipyard before returning to her home port in Noumea. However, the French Embassy says FS Vendémiaire was simply conducting sea trials after undergoing maintenance in Auckland and that its presence in domestic

  9. All forums have faded apart from special interest groups where relevant and mostly technical information is shared. The forum format is much better than facebook for sharing and discussing information because its searchable and reasonably organised which you will know if you've ever tried finding or filtering information on a facebook group. FB is definitely better in some respects like audience reach and instant response but I have given up on it having posted pretty much nothing in the last few years. Social media is extraordinarily good at promoting negativity, as I understand it the

  10. The right of innocent passage through a coastal state's territorial seas without any prior notification or consent applies to all types of ships, including warships. This is codified in the United Nations Conventions on the Law of the Sea. New Zealand's own legislation, which enforces UNCLOS, and signs UNCLOS into law for New Zealand is the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea Act 1996 Per UNCLOS, Warships may not enter "internal" waters. Internal waters are defined as waters which fall inside the maritime baseline. It is worth mentioning that several UNCLOS signat

  11. The Landing already has the appropriate washdown and stormwater treatment facilities for the boat yard and this is one of the reasons people are prepare to fight for it. It has a diverter for the washdown pad that sends the wash water to sewer when the waterblaster is in use and stormwater when the pad is clean. The stormwater from the whole yard drains to a sand filter to make sure no contaminants get into the harbour. The Yard worked hard to get a "Blue Ribbon" Environmental accreditation to show how clean it was. Westhaven Marina also got the same accreditation. During the c
