    Akarana 350

Sean from thirsty posted on Facebook he'd had to withdraw as his feet and hands had swelled up alarmingly. Awesome race to follow. Well done to all the competitors!

    Akarana 350

Yeah a few of the trackers seem to have been offline. Gale force has finished, beat truxton by 20 odd seconds. Not sure about motorboat, will be interesting to see where the sibling rivalry ended up. Katana finished half an hour or so after Gale force/truxton.
  3. Have a southern Pacific 2.4 if that's of interest?
  4. Thanks for the video. Hopefully mine is the same as that - havent been able to find a similar one for the ms25s.
  5. Thanks. Am I likely to need a puller to get the bearing carrier off the shaft or the seal off the bearing carrier?
  6. I have a Volvo ms25s sail drive, which has water in the oil. It has also started leaking oil from up top - I guess seawater has got in and pressurized it and caused it to spring another leak from the top of it somewhere. So I need to replace the shaft seal on the sail drive, and find the leak in the top of it and replace that seal too. So my questions for the team are 1.Does anyone know what's involved in changing the shaft seal? 2.does anyone know the likely source of the leak from the top of the sail drive unit? If so, is it likely to require removal of the sail drive to repl
  7. He's also made it around the world with the boat in more or less it's current configuration, including through some fairly tough conditions.
  8. The updates I can find are in French and a little hard to make sense of. Seb josse/Edmond de rothschild lost a piece of his bow or one of his bows? and is out. Charal has "bar damage"?? Hasn't pulled out as of the update I could find from 4 hours ago, but is only doing 2 knots. Another of the big name ultimes was back at the same place as EDR from the look of the tracker.
  9. R3 was a ryc one on a Sunday afternoon a week or so back. Sunny and a nearly 10kn Westerly. Gale force was not racing with prep work for rnz taking priority. I've only seen the ryc club race results for the day (which differ from the series ones as they include all the boats there that day not just series entries). Atamai got line in the no extras, I pipped him on handicap after he had some bad luck at the start with a backmarker from the previous division. Crocodile took the double if memory serves in the extras. Katana sailed a different course so withdrew.
  10. Interesting thread. Having spent time on yacht club committees where declining membership was a concern, there were two arguments. 1. You can drive membership up by offering cheaper "crew" memberships and then forcing crew to join if they want to sail. 2. Forcing crew to join just causes them not to turn up at all. My personal view is that for a Wednesday night type race where people head to the bar afterwards and the club probably does pretty well out of the bar, it's better to allow anyone to crew. This allows people to come along for a go and see if they want to get into it.
  11. Pretty sure at least Richmond and rnzys both have this option, probably others too.

    Coastal Classic

Yep. That's roughly how it works. Even if you do have irc, as only a few others do I think you'd still want phrf. In an ideal world you'd arrive early enough to do a few other races and get a history going.

    Racing insurance

I had cover with them a couple of years ago when we brought a boat over from Australia. They were willing to keep covering us here, but didn't have a presence here at the time, just a Sydney office. Service etc was fine, but their racing excess was a lot bigger than the local marine insurers.
  14. Awesome. Sailed a bit with Aaron Reynolds-Lovegrove a couple of years ago. Really good young guy, great to see him doing well.
  15. I've got a pretty rough one you can have for a bottle of rum? I'd rate it more as a delivery/back up sail than a club racing one, but it's there if you want it.

    Coastal Classic

I think Veladare was on clockwork.

    Coastal Classic

Not a full lottery, but a tough one for the smaller boats to do well in as the wind died and tide turned meaning they got stuck in the bay. We had an enjoyable sail up on That's Amorè with sun, flat water and a steady breeze. Could have used a code zero once past the hen and chicks as the breeze clocked aft a few degrees and the boats around us unfurled theirs and took off. Had to console ourselves with a roast lamb dinner which eased the pain of not having a code zero considerably. Fun team on board and we were happy with the result in our first decent outing in the new boat.

    Anchor Chain

I'd have thought you may as well just use 25m of chain and go full rope after that. Any time you need the whole lot out it'll be deep enough that having the top section chain will be more of a hassle than anything else?
  19. Given the huge size of manned container ships, I'm not sure they could change direction or stop (or see a small boat from the bridge) once it became obvious the other boat wasn't moving to avoid collision?
  20. Cat1 is a requirement for all NZ registered yachts leaving NZ. So if they were overseas registered then they may not, but otherwise they'll need it to clear customs. I think another good question (and something else that demonstrates the level of lack of knowledge) is why are they going to the islands now? It's mid October, the cruising fleet is all about to head back to NZ to avoid the cyclones that start about November up there.
  21. I got mine from mulford plastics (mt Wellington so not on the shore) then cut out with a jigsaw and sanded as you described. Depending on how you decide to attach them I have some of the 3m tape that people use for this purpose if you're interested.
  22. I saw a report that the tracker had been left on Gregor's boat which seemed to indicate it had been left floating.
  23. Are people experiencing any corrosion issues from using carbon as a backing plate?
  24. So true. I've friends with a Bach at whananaki who for years have tried to get me to stop in on my yacht. Every time I've passed it's not been an option. Agree with the other comments here though, plenty of great places up that coast.
  25. seems low odds of them all spontaneously combusting at once though, right?
