    Snowflakes?

"Bertelli, never shy to offer an opinion during a long association with the America's Cup, was a driving force in returning monohulls to the competition after three editions in multihulls." I'd say that rumour is alive and well.
  2. It was on our pier at westhaven a year or so back and I had a reasonably good look at it. Seemed well kept and regularly maintained. I'd say it's a hell of a lot of boat for that money!
  3. Maybe even more depending where you plan to be. A 12m berth at westhaven is already nearly 10k a year on it's own. Add insurance on a 12m 100k boat and a haul out and you're pretty much at 15k without really buying anything. And in my experience when you buy a boat despite them surveying ok and not 'needing' anything when you buy them, inevitably you'll want things to get it how you want it which will cost $$ in the first year or two.
  4. In terms of cat1 - an offshore ocean voyage to anywhere from NZ is a major undertaking. NZ is far away from everything. If you plan to have a base somewhere and do 'shorter' passages then you can go from place to place in NZ. For this you don't need cat1 (although plenty of the passages around the NZ coast should be respected and need equipment, experience and planning). If you are thinking of a home base in NZ and 'popping' off on a short passage to Tonga or Fiji - you may have to rethink. This kind of passage is a serious undertaking and most do it once at the start of the season (may-is
  5. So of I'm understanding correctly your customers did the right thing and set aside their personal securities to make good on their debts, while the sailors corner owners did not?
  6. Yes there's a legal loophole that allows it, but it seems mean-spirited at best and immoral at worst for the owners to declare insolvency to avoid their liabilities then opening again a day later under a new name.
  7. It certainly has lost any Goodwill I had for them. I won't be darkening their door in a hurry.
  8. Wouldn't worry too much about that. Anything that's made it through to the return line will have been through your (probably multiple) fuel filters. - if your problem is crud from tank 1 then it's likely to cause you blocked filters rather than contaminated fuel getting right through and into the return line. This being the case it's worth considering that dealing with a fuel contamination issue is maybe also going to require a secondary filter change at time of switch over. - if water or similar which has made it through your filters then the volume in a return line is likely to be sufficien
  9. I don't know the answer to that, but ran tan was on the hard a year or so back at gulf harbour, and the keel was removed and taken away for a week or so. So it has had (relatively) recent care and attention.
  10. Yeah they are. Will be a great shame to loose ran tan from the local race fleet if that's what happens.
  11. If doing this don't forget to plumb the return line into the small tank you're using. Don't ask how I know this...
  12. Aon are another broker. they offer insurance through Vero and perhaps others?
  13. Giddens still going I think? Although I think I remember someone telling me they are more focussed on awnings and shade sails etc than boat sails nowdays.

    Non Skid deck

Carbon 10.5 main would be more than 5k... I've used what appears to be the cheap Chinese version of the ultralon foam. From eBay in asia. Way way cheaper - forget the exact price but think it was ballpark usd100 for a 2.4x1.2m piece. Simple enough to install and nice under foot and a couple of years in it seems to be lasting ok. But you don't get the option of it being nicely routed out crossways at the front and back to fit the space or customised words in it etc. You buy a sheet of it with lines routed in teak style spacing and that's what you get. But it's grippy, comfy, easy to clean
  15. Good on them! True "enduro" spirit
  16. Elly is quite right, there's definitely a time limit of 10pm on 11 May in the nor/SIs. You might be thinking of comments made at briefing relating to the fact that if you are using it as an rni qualifier then you could take as long as you want and it would still count as a qualifier.
  17. I see they've just announced Tom Warren (panukus head of marina management) has left.
  18. There used to be a shop at rawhiti in boi over summer only. Used to have basic fruit and veggies etc, plus ice cream. Not sure if it still operates. Was also easily accessible from Oke.
  19. https://www.trademe.co.nz/2047246717 That looks like a possible?
  20. That's interesting. I wonder if their ability to do that is altered by whether the berth holder owns a lease or rents by the month? I suspect it would be very difficult for them to do that to a long term lease holder.

    Prop

Left or right handed? I've got a spare left handed fixed bladed prop for an 18hp Volvo sail drive that might fit?
  22. Very sad. 2 years ago we cruised through the San blas and felt safe. Guess anywhere is only as safe as the lowest denominator.
  23. Have had the same issues. We carry various devices that require charging between work phones, personal phones, iPads etc. Some work fine, some have issues. My take is that the USB socket chargers have been made for cars and therefore designed to produce 5v 2a or so when the car is operating (engine on and alternator running) and supplying the charger with 14.4v. On the boat we're often not running the engine, so the charger is only being supplied with 12.4v or so Best way to deal with it seems to be to coincide charging the sensitive devices with running the engine.
  24. Point taken, perhaps Tahiti isn't the best comparison. But while I don't like the westhaven prices and price rises, I'm still not convinced that we're way worse off than the rest of the world. While there are some examples above of places where there are cheaper prices, my experience has been that westhaven is in the ball park of other places overseas. Perhaps a better comparison is the cyca marina in Sydney. Yes also an expensive city, but so is Auckland. And their rates were well more than westhaven when I was there 2 years ago. Or RQYS in Brisbane which is around $800/month for
  25. Interesting to see the above comparison with places overseas. My experience has been the opposite, Marinas in Tahiti/Panama/the med where I have spent time have been at comparible if not more expensive than westhaven. If big increases every year continue it will see us moving out elsewhere at some point. But it was always going to happen over the next few years in the closest marina to the America's cup bases.
