    Trash Pumps

All the pump manufacturers play the same game - name plate ratings are based on zero head and 13.6V battery voltage I bought the layflat hose off Trademe, there are some regular listings there. You can see the current discharge curve for a 220ahr battery here (last page) https://www.trojanbattery.com/pdf/datasheets/T105_Trojan_Data_Sheets.pdf 30 amps looks to be around 6 hrs (~350 min). If you were in a situation where pumping is needed, best to start the engine immediately to push the battery voltage up

    Trash Pumps

I have one of these https://www.amazon.com/Rule-Evacuator-8000-High-Capacity-Submersible/dp/B0084A9K40 it is two 4000 pumps put together. Outlet is 3". I have a layflat hose for this, not ideal, this is better https://www.amazon.com/Camco-39631-Heavy-Duty-Sewer-Hose/dp/B000BP7M8W/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1540290110&sr=8-3&keywords=3%22+sewer+hose

  4. +1 for Barry, he planed my boat a few years ago. Highly recommended
  5. Pro's of being on the mast - slightly better performance at longer ranges - less likelihood of "nuking" the crew with magnetron based units Cons - much harder to work on - weight/windage

    Tool Kit

to add to IT's list (I am sure he has most of them) allen keys (metric and imperial) Screw drivers or bits for any weird heads Drill press for the electric drill Crescent big enough for largest fastener on board (and maybe a large Stilson) Rigid Offset Hex Pipe Wrench 4' length of scaffold tube (good for repelling borders as well) stubby socket ratchet couple of spanners and/or sockets that can grip on (ahem) rounded off nuts Wire Strippers a small wood handsaw a workbench
  7. Interesting fridge comparison between dedicated 12V and 230V thru an inverter I was surprised that the conversion losses thru the inverter did not significantly affect overall power consumption the 2 important points if you run a fridge thru an inverter 1. Its stand by power draw 2. Its ability to start the fridge compressor - in rush current at startup is typically 4-6 x the normal operating current for a second or so. Most inerters have some surge capacity but you need to check this. ps the inverter needs to be pure sine wave, modified sine wave will struggle to run the mot
  8. welded 316SS is not a good idea in this application, the chlorides in the salt water and the sulphur residues in the exhaust will vigorously attack the welds. Welded steel pipe galvanised is a much better budget option
  9. sounds like the anti siphon valve on your salt water discharge and the membrane is a bit tired, which means a new membrane probably at a price inversely proportional to it's size. You could try taking it out first and soaking it in hot water to remove any salt crystal buildup

    Fuel economy

Here are a couple of sets of fuel consumption figures to provide an idea of speed vs fuel burn https://www.hallberg-rassy.com/fileadmin/user_upload/pdfs/boats_pdfs/HR40propellerFlexofold.pdf https://www.hallberg-rassy.com/fileadmin/user_upload/pdfs/boats_pdfs/HR48propeller.pdf In both case the yachts are slightly underpropped, the Yanmar should be burning about 12lph at full revs, the Volvo should burn about 25lph, but the 2 speed Gori prop probably blurs the issue. When a boat is travelling at sq root LWL in ft (I could not find the symbol) fuel consumption is very low. Above that fu
  11. Emergel if there is any rust staining, then Autosol, and maybe a wax polish to finish off
  12. Lotus 10.6 Mk II is another option. Not the fastest but comfortable and can carry a bit more load than an 1104
  13. Comes on top of Garmin buying Navionics last year. Options are shrinking...
  14. I assume this is about a Farr 11.6, they stopped the tube below the underside of the deck for wheel steering quadrants (for those who did not want stretched arms!), then there is a top bearing on the deck
  15. There is a double pulley mounted on the front of the engine so that would have been to drive the compressor. Maybe the original installation made the mistake of mounting the compressor on the engine bed or hull, rather than bracketing off the engine. This can cause on going issues with the compressors seals. Also is there an existing condenser? This will be on the salt water feed side to the engine salt water pump Greg at Fridgetech is supposed to have developed a 12V system that can connect into existing eutectic tanks. Might be worth calling him. That is a reasonable size freezer on top
  16. That was Alain Colas when he circumnavigated in the tri, renamed Manureva. He and the tri disappeared in the Atlantic a couple of years later.
  17. "rescue insurance" is effectively covered in taxes paid by citizens of the member states in the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) with the SOLAS and SAR conventions providing rules which all members are bound to. Furthermore all vessels on the high seas have the obligation to render assistance in emergencies where it is safe to do so. This issue is often raised, but in fact is effectively no different to SAR for someone stuck on the side of a mountain or a lost tramper. Consider car accidents, apart from the ambulance ride all the costs of attending to victims are part of the opera
  18. NZ Customs is quite clear that a NZ registered yacht must have a Cat 1 certificate to depart NZ. They are doing this on behalf of Maritime NZ who have set this requirement using their powers under the Marine Transport Act. Yes there are some items in the Safety Regs that might not fit all instances, but a good inspector will take a pragmatic approach looking to see that you are complying with the intent of the rules.
  19. And instead of the tree being put to good use, ie being milled and used to build some modern day Wakes, it is going to be buried. What a waste and think of all the CO2 emissions as it decomposes.
  20. all states in Australia have compulsory boat registration and skipper licensing (I still have mine from WA), no proof that this makes any difference except two more forms of tax.
  21. How about the other CI, Cook Islands: https://www.maritimecookislands.com/our-services/registration-services/registering-a-yacht/
  22. Suggest you talk to Richard Thorpe at TNL Pindar for shipping advice. You should also clarify the GST situation, remember if GST applies it would also be charged on the freight and insurance cost if you ship.
