  1. This is great, something positive after a summer of horrors. I am going to say it; Nigel is the best name ever for a solo sailor

  2. Katana - a Sunfast 3600 that races out of Auckland is beginning an anti-clockwise solo circumnavigation of NZ today. Follow along here: https://forecast.predictwind.com/tracking/display/Katana/ It's been a long time between posts but just arriving out at Great Barrier to start a continuous ( hopefully) solo around NZ. Will go anticlockwise..Start this evening off the Needles and hopefully cross my path in a few weeks. Tracker thanks to Predictwind. Looking pretty light the next few days...happy about that.

  3. Gently chaps, gently. The unemotional facts are that 1] 95% at least of people on the water are reasonably sensible, and sometimes make mistakes through ignorance. I certainly have. 2] we always remember the odd one who really gave us a fright. 3] yes, its a pity that there is no size/power limit for people buying and operating their first boat. MOst of us have worked our way up from dinghys to keelboats or launches and therefore mostly know what we are doing. let's not lable whole groups because of a few idiots.

  4. Plenty of top yachties and designers own launches mate. And they didn't get there on their junk rigged racing boats.

  7. This time last year he was pedalling the length of NZ in the Tour Aotearoa, then came back and did the Three Kings race two handed -in fact there were a number of crew who had just done the TA on that race! These guys know how to live -good on him.

  8. Just because, plus he needs to do a qualifying passage for the solo Tasman, this should do it

  9. All good Zoz - we’re all a bit sailing time deprived right now 👍

  10. Ok fair enough Rangi...I'm calmed down a bit and hopefully a few others have too. I was actually taking the Michael a bit with my generalisation, and even thought about deleting my post couple mins later early this morning, but started work, and forgot about it - then saw the pile on, and got a little testy. As someone said, there's has been more serious things going on recently - lets just put it down to blokes letting of steam, me included. Cheers

  11. I’m happy to answer them Zoz, as it didn’t say to stick a root vegetable up every exhaust. It was in response to a particular sub-section of boat owners that run their generators all night. I’m sure a small number of yacht owners also run their engines to charge the batteries and get the water hot.

  12. Jeezus, reading some of these comments make me embarrassed to be a boat owner... its like listening to my kids scrapping. Quite a stray from the original post, should all be glad the guy is OK, and (I'm assuming as you all obviously have Internet currently) be grateful your house isn't buried under 5 foot of silt in the Hawkes bay..... plenty of other things to worry about besides who (in your opinion) is an idiot on the water.

  15. You don’t regularly encounter yachts exhibiting such ignorant and poor seamanship as one does with stinkpot operators must be the fumes…

  16. You forgot the "beer in one hand, fishing rod in the other" I too detest the 'Boatie' term. I detest 'Boaties' full stop. I have no respect for anyone on a stinkpot. But, unfortunately, the term is embedded in the media.
