  1. We were dived on at BOI this year while anchored at Urapukapuka. We had a clean bill of health and received a certificate saying so.
  2. 2 boats finished of the 12 starters with a revised course Karaka to Kawau. We chose not to race this year due to the very wet weather forecast. It's always a good event. Hopefully the conditions will be better next year.
  3. Here's an example of a launch that reportedly sunk up Northland in 2006 after a suspected whale strike within 10 minutes. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10364398
  4. Is this the same stuff? http://www.trademe.co.nz/home-living/outdoor-garden-conservatory/gardening-landscaping-supplies/pest-weed-control/auction-1267542239.htm Listed as 99.9% Orthoboric Acid. 1kg for $9.95 plus shipping.
  5. He's also very low on power so has all non essentials turned off. He's doing 3.1kts VMG at the moment with 278nm to go with an improving forecast. Inspirational stuff. Go Conrad!
  6. Conrad is sponsored by Oceanvolt and also has/had solar cells sewn into his mainsail. I'd suspect the cabin top solar panels are custom made by the look of the angles but it's hard to tell from that picture. http://oceanvolt.com/conrad-colman-vendee-globe-2016
  7. Do I understand this right? A crew of 6; two to sail the boat and four to provide hydraulic power? http://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/news/article.cfm?c_id=4&objectid=11801021
  8. I paid $275 (including shipping) for my semi flexible 100W solar panel about 18 months ago and it was distributed from NZ. I only use it as a nice to have and am not relying on it for anything important. It's still working fine.
  9. Rawhide has started a thread on the new F1020 website forum RE the 2017 race calendar. It would be good to get input from as many 1020 owners as we can so as we can maximise class turnout for each nominated event.
  10. I have an old Navman 3100 depth only instrument (with repaired display) you could have if it helps. It could help isolate whether the issue is the instrument or not. I also have a transducer if that helps although the cable is quite short. I finally replaced my Navman gear with B&G. Steve
  11. I'm not sure if the regulator you are referring too has the feature, but you can also get regulators with an auto shutoff feature on excessive flow. The gas fitter that replaced mine also mentioned something about the seal type that was more appropriate for a marine environment. I previously had a standard garden variety LPG regulator like you would find on a BBQ.
  12. I normally anchor in the light blue bit (I draw 1.8m) and dinghy in. There is a well marked channel to follow in but be aware that it dries out and can become to shallow even for the dinghy so you need to watch your tides. Also make sure everyone is wearing their life jackets to keep the HM happy. There is an area just before the bridge that you can pull the dinghy up on and you are pretty well in the township. As IT said, it's worth the trip on a good day.
  13. I have dragged while in Issy Bay and was very grateful for the person that jumped onto Farrari and re-anchored for us. Without their quick action Farrari would have ended up on the rocks or worse still collecting another boat on the way. Both mine and a mate's boat dragged more or less at the same time anchored in a similar spot. We were having a drink on another persons boat when someone said there was a person on my boat. Both my mate and I went to find out what was happening and while we were sorting Farrari out his boat also dragged. I have a habit of leaving the key in the ignitio
  14. All I can think of is they were trying to get the topsides off the bottom to prevent further damage at the tide changeover. Not sure how successful they would be and the loads would be quite high. The rudder looks quite munted.

    Matapouri Bay

We stayed in the alcove on the North side when going up to BOI this year. Good holding in a 20 knot SW but got an Easterly sea swell coming through that caused us to rock. A pretty bay but I don't think I'd stay there again in anything other than very settled conditions.

    Tablet charging

Chris, are you plugging your tablet into the USB port on your boats 12V power supply by any chance? USB 3 specification only supplies 4.5W (0.9A @ 5V) maximum power. I have a DC/DC inverter for my laptop and it has a USB port on it but like you are experiencing, it is very slow to charge anything (phone or tablet). I do have a cigarette lighter socket USB charger and that works a lot better. You could try something like this (warning - this is not exactly the same as the one I use and I haven't had any experience with this specific one.) https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/MPPMIX12313/
  17. From memory the Absolute Marine ones were an after market version, not that it mattered. I tried to buy a couple about two years ago and was told the last two had been sold the week prior. From memory the ones listed at Navico were transom mounted, not thru hull. I have heard of someone modifying another brand of paddlewheel so that might be an option.

    Solar setup

I have both what MB and KM mentioned for different purposes. I have a 10W solar panel connected by two diodes to both batteries for top up while in the marina and a flexible 100W with MPPT controller that can be plugged in while I am away cruising. The latter only ever charges the house battery. For the flexible one I had a cover with an open front face made with battens for additional strength placed along the bottom. The cover has loops in the corners so I can tie it down to the handrails and works a treat. It gives me the flexibility to shift the panel to the boom if I am going to b
  19. Personally I would head towards Musick Point on an incoming tide. That would probably land you somehwere on Bucklands Beach with more floating than swimming. The biggest issue would be dodging the ferries and other traffic. I'm surprised she couldn't raise any attention from the Tuesday night BBYC yacht racing or the passing ferries. She would have only had to walk out to the end of the reef on the Western side and wave her arms about.
  20. You could try configuring your phone for Satellite based GPS only and see if that helps. By default I would expect it to be configured for satellite-based and network-based GPS (high precision) meaning you could momentarily lose your location if 3G/4G coverage is dropping in and out. This configuration will have some side effects - It will take longer for the location to be acquired and it may be less accurate when you are surrounded by lots of buildings. Phone configuration guide is here http://userguide.vodafone.co.nz/web/vodafone-smart-prime/office-and-leisure/gps-maps-and-navigat
  21. Mine was a MKII Gazelle and had an electric winch with a mechanical pulley system from memory .... no hydraulics in sight.
  22. My MkII Gazelle had an electric winch for the keel. Depending on the cost to upgrade/repair your hydraulic one, it might be worth a considering replacing it with electric. Just a thought. Steve
  23. I've got an old dual Ezi-block(SP?) mainsheet block setup with dual cam cleats lying around somewhere that I replaced off my 1020 if it's of any use. PM if you are interested Steve
  24. Yes, I was lucky enough to able to retrofit using the existing axles so it saved a bit of coin. It was still a reasonably expensive exercise although it did help I was able to get the parts through a mate at trade.
  25. I was able to fit brakes to the trailer for my 25ft Gazelle. The trailer was originally built using Trojan hubs, couplings etc. While it was a bit fiddly picking the right parts, it only took 1/2 a day or so to actually fit them.
