Yeah I saw those stories. But looks like someone else is perhaps living on it out there?

On a semi-related note, anyone know about Southern Progress (?), big old rusty thing seems to be (semi-)permanently anchored in the same spot at izzy bay?

Pretty close to the worst conditions possible for back of the barrier I'd think. Huge easterly swell and quite a lot of forecast uncertainty. Certainly wouldn't find me back there.
-
Wow. Bold choice for sure. I guess it's probably ok in there, but if it's not... The storm is definitely tracking further east and looking less scary as a result. Metservice seems reluctant to ease their official forecasts though, compared to what most of the models are showing.

Don't forget all the different keels!

This is a case where I think there's a bit more detail on the electronic chart than the paper one (see the thread about paper charts). Compare with

Hauraki gulf: Northeast swell rising to 4 metres. Significant and hazardous waves expected, with the potential for hazardous rip currents. Mmm lovely.

storing paper charts on board - whats your method?
khayyam replied to aardvarkash10's topic in MarineTalk
Interesting, I find the opposite -- the detail available when you zoom in electronically mostly far exceeds what you can get on paper. I agree though that you need to be able to fall back to paper when the electronics give up. But that's more about replacing the gps than the chart itself. -
The forecast track has been wobbling back and forth quite a lot. Exactly where and when remains to be seen, but I'd say some swell is a certainty! Was surprised to see how much there already is down at the beach this afternoon.

Seems to be so much worse recently? The ****ers parking on the beach and on the grass in the reserve near us recently... what an entitle bunch of wankers. There's no shortage of narking but getting the council/AT to do any enforcement takes some doing.

Answering my own question. I'm not sure the guide's "rather small" quite covers it.
-
Restricted by draft or room? RAYC guide just says can get in there draft <1.8m, had been planning to check it out next week.

Just take care with wake and tidal stream.

Afaik there's still water at orapiu without going all the way back to matiatia.

Can anyone tell me about the suitability of the Hokianga for dinghy sailing? We're going to be in Rawene for a bit and could take the Hobie, just wondering if it's worth the trouble or not. Are the ramps tidal? How's the sailing? Can't find that there are any clubs sailing regularly, but seems like it should be good.

I can't even remember now. I think maybe I went and dug the book out of the library? Tide Maps Hauraki.pdf

Yeah those look good. I need to beg/borrow/rent one though as buying the charger is almost as expensive as battery replacement... !

I've got some 12v lead acid batteries that were neglected (not by me!) and I'm wondering about reconditioning / desulphating. Not marine, but deep cycle (mobility scooter). Does anyone know of a place on the shore that does this?

On the other hand, if you want to abandon a boat you hardly need to put it on a mooring to do so...

The bond idea is appealing, but it would have to be pretty significant. I remember another thread with disposal cost estimates. 5k? 10k?

Sad to hear about metro. Remember when she was sailing with DYC, ~2011? That feedback profile doesn't look half bad compared to many of the disasters I've come across on TM.

Thanks. At first I was disappointed that it wasn't the boat, but that's a good laugh.

They should just buy winddan and call it the new coastguard app.
