  2. I've fished off East Cape on these boats and found the skippers and deckies very competent. And the boats very sea worthy. I think the doco interviews pretty well exonnerated the skipper and his decisions. The court may have a different view but a rogue wave is really difficult to forecast.
  3. The skipper is responsible for the safety of everyone on board, the question is was he acting responsibly? There is no 3 mile rule but the question will be would a competent skipper in the prevailing conditions made the same decisions?

If you are using a AC12 or 42, the main issue in steering downhill is a fluxgate or (slightly better) a RC300 - which is a rate compass, but still a fluxgate. The single biggest improvement you can make is a new compass - like the precision 9 - it's solid state, and gives MUCH more accurate and stable heading output to the AP computer, and therefore results in a much better course. I noticed that most in a quartering sea. If you want that AND better wind steering, then change the ACXX to a NACX (The X's are just the model to suit your boat) I have 10Hz H2183 (2013) SS and from what
  5. Hi Lukas Thanks for your reply but I don't think you have read my information properly. If you scroll up to the photo of the boat & just above that is my message to you which says I have a Whiting 26 Quarter Tonner named "Sweathog" moored at Little Bucklands Beach in Auckland. I hope that answers your question. If you would like more information, please message me with your email address & mobile number. I will then send you more information. Thanks Ian
  6. Hi Clara. Thanks for the compliment! Are you interested in sailing with us or do you just like the boat. If you might be interested in sailing. Please message me your email address & mobile number & I will flick you some email. I have attached a hotted up photo of Sweathog after Graffix Art redid the graphics for me at last haul out.
  7. Would it be because the skipper didn't do anything wrong and Maritime NZ are just looking for a public hanging for PR purposes? Has anyone on here ever heard of this rule you can't go within 3 miles of land?
  8. Seeing how Far North Boy isnt around anymore,if a airline pilot crashed and killed his passengers he would be grounded,so why can a charter skipper who endangered life/lost life be able to continue operating/skippering?
  9. looked at a farr early 90s at pine harbour, very cheap until we talked to the broker, full of pox and delaminating, only good for parts.White gel coat, its all in the build. Humidity/heat etc was resin mixed right or layed up in a timely manner, all sorts of variables has an effect. As Pricilla posted carvel no issue if built well.Moana laid off Devonport for years painted black
  10. Part of build quality is adhering to the specification of your materials. Some materials strength and durability is affected by heat. Generally Polyester fairs better than epoxy. Industry standard practice is to avoid dark colours where expansion/ contraction is detrimental. If your back pocket doesn’t mind , have at it. Eg certain cedar profile weather boards an human obsession with black. Bad building practices just make degradation faster. West 410 not recommended with dark colours. YMMV.
  11. If she’s well built the colour is irrelevant😀
  12. Sure old style carvel planked boats with caulking in between the planks would usually be painted white, as dark colours were said to attract too much heat and open the planks - but then again I seen plenty of Pommy carvel planked boats painted dark colours. Had a black hull on my previous boat. GRP 70's built. No delamination issues. I'm no boat builder or technician, and probably prone to 'Bro Science' LOL, but if a dark colour hull is enough to delaminate a Farr built with modern methods, then it was built like sh#t.
  13. sh*t we have a black boat
  14. Really interesting to have followed this thread as today I have a letter from my gas supply company , the meter on my household supply needs to be replaced. All good, but then they go on to say the ‘full installation “ needs to pass a compliance test after they replace the meter. If it fails the system will need to be repaired to compliance! At least I now understand the implications….
  15. triangulating the wind between your ears and your nose is pretty cheap
  16. The case is mainly based around not holding a current first aid. It has very little to do with seamanship according to friend in the industry He called it a B/S case.
  17. Swell looked a lot different tonight on news than it did in the doco that was screened earlier A lot more like I’d have expected as we were sheltering not far away
  18. and it begins https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/crime/enchanter-trial-maritime-nz-opens-case-against-fishing-boat-skipper-lance-goodhew/OSIFXFAA55GDDAI4ZRNVJLSTSA/ The three-week trial for Enchanter skipper Lance Goodhew started in the Whangārei District Court today. Goodhew faces a single charge of breaching his duties as a worker on the vessel and in doing so, allegedly exposing individuals to a risk of death or serious injury. Two charges against his recreational fishing charter business were dropped today as there was no evidence. The Enchanter was hired by a gro
  19. Just looking at the 1050 for sale reminded me to post this. Two years ago we wrapped our boat dark blue. Looked beautiful. Until bubbles started to appear on the hull. Surveyor tapped and concluded delamination. He said he was working with another boat with same issue. Long story short and $000's later have just stripped and repainted. Turns out the builder didn't put enough effort into prep between layers and the heat generated by the sun on the dark colour encouraged separation. It occurred mainly in the fairing compound so a lucky escape. Not really anything to discuss j
  20. Right now for round the cans I want NextLeg TWA and NextLeg AWA to be more accurate than the current random numbers I get out of the Zeus. For longer races I want a Twd that doesn't change when the wind picks up or doesn't change 10deg when on opposite tacks. I would prefer not to be doing the calibration in my head at 2am in the dark as the wind speed increases or decreases. More accurate laylines, time/dst to laylines would be a plus as well but for daytime racing it doesn't really matter. High accuracy wind data will have a flow on effect to the quality of the ap respo
  21. Where are you based. Not clear which part of both island you are in.
  22. Yep, fair enough, but I'd say that even once a second is plenty for start line maneuvers - there is a LOT of calcs goin on for that, all at sub second intervals, and how many course changes can you do in a sec anyway . Navico support has become less efficient since the Brunswick takeover...
  23. Good point IT, I do not. And even if I did know the spec I couldn't assume it from the spec... I am basing my assumption on the several reports I have read that when the start line functionality with polar is enabled, the wind calc triangle output drops and this is visible on an n2k bus trace. Hence the unit appears to become overloaded. It will definitely be great to know if the 3dms can be utilized in the wind triangle calcs by the Edge. Thank you very much for following this up with B&G - I messaged them a fortnight ago and have heard nothing
  24. Pretty much if the accuracy of your existing systems (when working!) was fine for you, then you don't need a processor system. If though, you want to know the exact wind angle on the next leg, you want or have polars, and you have sail crossover points to within a couple of degrees and knots, then more accurate info will make you sail faster....
  25. Anyone want a good 1050? A mate is selling his https://spboatsales.co.nz/1994 Elliott 1050/
