vesper1 3
NZYF are no longer doing cat one for offshore See excerpt below from briefings. Who knows where this will lead !! This means that, from July 1, 2024, Yachting New Zealand will no longer manage the safety inspection system for recreational craft and their crew departing overseas. This function will instead be performed by Maritime New Zealand and follows months of discussions with the regulatory body and various other stakeholders. We believe the system requires more active management and that Maritime New Zealand is better equipped to do this in future.
Guest 113
Define "more active management". Does the number of unsatisfactory outcomes of current Cat 1 boats to overseas registered non-Cat 1 boats warrant this "more active management"? Not mentioning todays infinitely better forcasting and comms. Or does YNZ just not want to be involved, preferring MNZ wields the big stick.
Ex Machina 384
Fervently hoping one or more inspectors stay on in northland for raceboat inspections , hell any of the regions outside of Auckland for that matter .
Bad Kitty 289
Anymore that people can add to this? Polish registration is starting to look attractive?
Psyche 755
A mate went Polish reg this season- no issues departing NZ or entering Tonga. They are returning in a few weeks if you want to wait to see how that goes. A bit under a grand to do.

A few points you need to consider if registered offshore 1. You won't get insurance from NZ based providers eg Vero (coastal or offshore) 2. Your boat will be subject to the laws of the country whose flag you fly, makes it a bit more challenging when it is country whose language you don't speak 3. Worst case if there was another COVID type situation, you may not be able to return to NZ on the boat At the end of the day case of weighing up the pro's and con's, making sure you are fully informed and deciding what works best for you. 1
Black Panther 1,717
1 & 2 aren't a particular worry, where do you get your information for #3?
Black Panther 1,717
I see MNZ posting on FB that they need 3 months to process cat 1 requests. 1

John B 109
MNZ, shutting down offshore cruising for Kiwi registered boats. 3 months FFS. I suppose they'll want the third crewmember name that Insurance forces you to have as well. The system is broken , this was an opportunity to deregulate the process instead of putting more hurdles in front of us. I tell you what is funny, the old YNZ Cat system was criticized as difficult and yet it was downright holistic and simple compared to these guys.
1paulg 20
It is looking as though the next Island cruising season is going to be a nightmare getting clearances - the system is definitley breaking down - they have lost quite a few experienced Inspectors who will be hard to replace
waikiore 454
Look forward to hearing how applying for an IVC goes compared to the old Cat one, and has anyone told the insurers I am guessing not?

(not inspectors anymore, apparently).
aardvarkash10 1,072
But, my yacht is a taonga! Year of build Vessels over 50 years old may be classified as protected objects under the Protected Objects Act 1995. If the vessel is a protected object, it cannot be sailed offshore without (as well as an International Voyage Certificate) having export documentation and meeting other legal requirements. If your vessel fits into this category, you will need to contact the Ministry of Culture & Heritage before filling in this application form. It is your responsibility to ensure any export documentation is sought and held as necessary.
Psyche 755
Does this apply to houses, cars, partners?

waikiore 454
Always has from some quarters, though most of the Auckland inspectors had the common sense to assess each individual .
Jon 398
Sailed into Opua last night on a foreign registered vessel, waiting clearance this morning. 5days 8hrs Denarau to Opua. I was a Cat 1 inspector, I foresee offshore registration being more the norm going forward I am going offshore in my boat again next season, so am going to start the IVC process soon just to see how it all works out As an inspector our role was more to coach the applicant through the whole process, I can’t see 3 people employed by Wellington doing this. I’ve recently started “Pacific Cruising Coach” to help anyone with the whole process of completing an offshore cruise, get in touch if this is you or someone you know

marinheiro 363
There is a webinar 17 December, see the registration link herein https://www.yachtingnz.org.nz/news/international-voyage-certificate-replacing-cat-1-all-you-need-know It is purely academic now, but just remember it was YNZ that chucked its toys out of the cot on inspecting cruising boats, MNZ were quite happy with how the system was running. The irony now is that yachts competing in offshore races have to get a Cat 1 certificate and an IVC, because Cat 1 no longer has any legal standing, talk about a home goal.
